Capgemini today announced the launch of its 500-seater call centre in Kolkata, and is looking for more space for expansion.

The company has set a target of a headcount of 10,000 for its India operations by 2007, which would be evenly distributed among its centres in Bangalore, Mumbai and Kolkata. There are currently around 3,000 professionals in Mumbai and 1,100 in Bangalore.

Baru Rao, chief executive officer (CEO) of Capgemini India, said the existing facility at Sector V in Salt Lake was adequate for 500 professionals.  The company would require more space to take it up to 3,000 professionals.

The company would also explore the possibility of setting up a campus in Kolkata. Rao, however, clarified that the decision on building a campus would depend on the success of the Kolkata venture.

Paul Hermelin, CEO of Capgemini, said: "India is core to Capgemini group strategy. The opening of the new centre is an important step for the group, which has now reached critical size in India."
