With IT-spending regions such the United States and Europe mired in economic uncertainty, geographies like China are emerging as important markets for the Indian IT industry, according to S Ramadorai, vice-chairman of the country’s largest IT exporter, Tata Consultancy Services Limited (TCS).
On the economic downturn in Europe, to which TCS has 28 per cent exposure, he said Europe was a geography which they were always watching carefully. “We have to be cautious and observe that (Europe),” he told mediapersons, adding there had not been any impact on the company.
When asked whether the company was looking at any acquisitions, Ramadorai said the company was looking at growth. “We are distributed across the globe. We do 60 per cent of our business in North America, 25 per cent in the UK and the Europe, and Latin America, Asia-Pacific and India. All these are important markets for us. There are nuances and opportunities in each of these markets, which we would look at. And there are plenty of organic opportunities. Acquisitions ... that’s strategic,” he said.
Earlier, speaking at the 30th members’ conference of the Centre for Organisation Development (CoD) on the theme – Skilling India to scale’ here on Friday, Ramadorai said the time had come for all to value skills and pay for them. “This is something that industry must face – demand good training and be willing to pay for it,” he said.
On the SME sector, Ramadorai said the sector was vital to the success of manufacturing. However, almost 86.11 per cent of the units are unregistered. Professionalisation of MSMEs, bringing in good practices, skilled resources and training of its leaders and entrepreneurs must be addressed on a war footing. Currently, the MSME manufacturing sector is expected to register a growth of 10-12 per cent. It is estimated that 750,000 MSMEs will be added every year, generating 3 million jobs per year. Which means that over the next five years, the sector will need 15 million skilled and semi-skilled workers, he said.
Governor, EL Narasimhan, on Friday presented Ramadorai with V Krishnamurthy Award for Excellence 2010, instituted by the Centre for Organisation Development.
