Claiming that the IT sector in the state should continue to register a growth rate better than the national average in this fiscal, West Bengal's IT minister felt IT companies would continue to come to the state.
West Bengal's IT sector rose 46 per cent last fiscal primarily on account of a lower base, compared to the national average of 29 per cent. While the growth rate is expected to dip in 2007-08, minister Debesh Das was still confident about securing a higher than national average figure.
"The picture will become more clear after the December figures come in from Nasscom", he said at a Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) IT conference.
The Indian IT industry is expected to witness slower growth in the third and fourth quarters of this fiscal, Nasscom has said in a recent statement.
The premier IT body in the country expected the industry to recover in another 12 months despite the global recessionary trends. "West Bengal has managed to attract around 35 to 40 IT companies to the state per year. In all 33 companies set up shop here last year. The number would not be lower in this fiscal", Das said.
