Dell plans to launch more smartphones in coming months

With the mobile handset industry witnessing fast growth, IT major Dell plans to introduce more models in the coming months, a top official of the company said here today.

"It [mobile phone business] is doing really well. We are ramping it up", Dell India Chairman and Dell Services (Executive Vice-President) Suresh Vaswani said.

Though the smartphones division contribute only a small percentage of the company's business in India, Dell India plans to bring in more models in future.

Dell India currently offers Dell Streak5, XCD35, Dell Venue and Dell Venue Pro in the mobile division.

"XCD35 is the entry level phone while Venue and Venue Pro are offered with Android and Microsoft platforms. The Streak5 is the five inch tablet and a smartphone. This year we plan to bring in some more [devices]," a company official said.

 

Vaswani said Dell planned to focus on "new generation technologies" in India as part of sustaining its growth path achieved in the last five years. "We have been growing at 34% CAGR in the last five years. We will focus on new generation technologies," he said.

He claimed Dell had very strong market share in mid-markets of which India was one. "Our thrust in India is to leverage on the new generation technologies," he said.

Vaswani said the company had already made significant investments in new generation technologies -- cloud computing globally.

On acquisition of Force10 Networks as part of ramping its networking business, he said they had completed the acquisition and would double headcount in one year.

"We have finalised the acquisition of Force10 Networks. We will be doubling the headcount there", he said.

Force10 centre Chennai operations has 265 employees. Besides, Dell also plans to hire several hundred new members in engineering, sales and marketing, service jobs in Chennai R&D centres.

Vaswani said this was Dell's 10th acquisition in the last 18 months. "We now look forward to Force1's Chennai R&D team bolstering our foray into Networking. We plan to significantly increase the engineering headcount at Force10 Chennai over the next one year," he said.

Some of Dell Force10's customers include Fortune 100 companies, internet portals and research laboratories.
