Facebook, the world’s largest social networking company, today reached a new milestone when its monthly active users crossed the billion mark. The company had hit 500 million users in July 2010.

In a post on the website, founder Mark Zuckerberg said: “If you’re reading this, thank you for giving me and my little team the honour of serving you. Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life. I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.”

Facebook’s massive user bases in countries such as Brazil, India, Indonesia,Mexico and the United States helped it reach this new landmark. However, of the total number of users, 600 million use the mobile version of the social networking site.

Along with hitting a 1 billion user base, the company also released some interesting details. For instance, the median age of users is 22-years. Since Facebook was launched in February 2009, over 1.13 trillion likes have been received, and 140.3 billion friend connections made and about 219 billion photos uploaded. The data was pulled on September 9, 2012, and represents the total number of photos currently on this site – in other words, it excludes deleted photos. “If we wanted to include all photos ever uploaded, the estimate we have is 265 billion. Photo uploading launched fall 2005,” said the company.

About 62.6 million songs have been played 22 billion times - that’s about 210,000 years of music, added a company source.
