Suresh Balasubramanian, national sales director of Cisco Consumer Business Group (India) is not only besotted with his Flip handycam but also feels that it has taught him the basics of creative photography with a multitude of functions for amateurs. Not one to waste money on accumulating pointless gadgets, he is all for investing in technology that will automate and synchronise his household appliances.

What’s your favourite function in your favourite gadget?
My current favourite gadget would be my handycam. Among other neat functions, the handycam has a portrait function in the low light mode that gives my videos a nice trailing effect. It is really amazing to see how the handycam captures frames.

Is there any technology that has you in its awe?
I am fascinated by the potential of technologies like Digital Home and TelePresence. I feel they will transform the way we live, socialise and do business, by offering a more connected way of life. I think they are the coolest technologies to look forward to.

If you could build, what kind of dream gadget would you build?
Well, if I could I’d build a device that would be something like a universal remote which is sort of inspired by the concept of Digital Home. That way I would be able to bring every single appliance in my house such as the television, air conditioner, phone, microwave et cetera to one single touch point. At the end of the day, a more connected life experience is what I search for.

Have you ever helped someone with their gadgets?
Yes, being in the consumer products industry I keep helping my friends and family with brand decisions and specific features of products. I have advised them on home routers, laptops and digital cameras, among others.

How often do you buy gadgets?
I do not buy gadgets very often, maybe once in six months. If it’s a really expensive product, I would probably do my homework before making the purchase. Being a music lover, I am looking forward to purchasing a high-end music player sometime soon.

Have you ever bought a gadget that could not justify its worth?
No. I usually consider the utility and value for money of a gadget before I buy it.

What would be a perfect geeky gift that you would like to give someone?
It would have to be my new Flip camcorder. All the functions are easy to use and I think my family and friends will love it.

Have you had any embarrassing moments with your gadgets?
Earlier in my career, I was once demonstrating a particular product to a customer and the product stopped working mid-way. However, since it was only a technical glitch, I managed to get away with it.
