The government may allow overseas mobile phone carriers to apply for licences to provide third-generation services (3G services) in the world's fastest growing wireless market, telecom secretary D S Mathur said today.

The nation may auction or allocate the spectrum, and hasn't set a deadline for issuing a policy, he added.

Third-generation wireless services allow faster downloads of music and videos on mobile phones.
