Future Axiom, the 50:50 joint venture between retail giant Future Group and Gulf region’s mobile retailer Axiom Telecom, plans to add 3,800 people to its workforce over the next one year.

The announcement comes in the wake of the consolidation of Future-Axiom’s other mobile brands under the brand name “One Mobile”. “One cannot afford to have three to five brands performing the same functions, therefore we have changed the entire look, product portfolio and service offering it in one uniform brand,” said Ashy Sehgal, chief executive officer, Future Axiom Telecom.

The company plans to open 1,500 stores and touch points in the country by December 2009, giving it a reach in 58 cities. The parent company has earmarked an investment of $40 million to fund the first phase of expansion.

“We will largely be investing in back-end services, including Service City, a service unit that employees about 200 technicians,” Sehgal said. The stores offer mobile handsets, accessories, landlines, mobile connections and recharges.

Elaborating on his plans for service centres, Sehgal said, “Every Axiom store, which is our high-end brand, has its own service facility. In the coming year, we will open about 20-25 service centres to cater to our One Mobile customers.”
