Notwithstanding the lack of policy framework for Internet protocol (IP) telephony, Geodesic Information Systems is ready with a suite that enables calls between multiple devices, such as personal computers and mobile phones. More importantly, the product is being positioned for the masses and can be downloaded from the company’s website.
The move gains importance as IP telephony is still illegal in the country, even though the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has recommended removing all curbs on the technology. Even though global majors like Google, Yahoo! and Cisco have similar suites, this would make Geodesic the first Indian company to rollout the product.
Moreover, most other softwares do not support multiple devices.
The company is likely to become the first player to offer the services once IP telephony is legalised in the country.
Confirming this, Geodesic Managing Director Kiran Kulkarni said: “The software enables users to make calls using Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology over various modes - from a PC to a mobile phone, or from a mobile phone to a landline or other handheld devices."
