A year ago, a large company in Southeast Asia, with some 30,000 contract workers, approached Chennai-based Ramco Systems, which develops Human Capital Management (HCM) solutions for various critical sectors, with a peculiar problem it was facing on its shop floor. It said that though, on an average, it takes a worker about 15 minutes to reach his machine from the time he enters the factory, in one of its units, workers were taking 45 minutes to reach their machines. This meant that the company was losing 30 minutes of man-hours per worker every day.
