The desktop and mobile PC market in India stood at nearly 3.15 million units in the third quarter of 2011, a growth of 13 per cent on a year-on-year basis.
Research and analysis firm Gartner said buoyed by the demand in the consumer market, the third quarter was the best in the history of the Indian PC industry.
“This growth was primarily driven by the mobile PC market, which grew 29 per cent year-on-year in the third quarter. A number of festivals helped drive the demand in the Indian consumer market. The consumer segment accounted for 55 per cent of PC shipments. However, we need to be cautious. We should not expect the success to be replicated in the fourth quarter. After the festive season, there would be sluggishness in the market,” said Vishal Tripathi, principal research analyst, Gartner.
All major multinational PC vendors recorded double-digit growth in PC shipments in the third quarter.
However, the sudden growth also saw a significant shift in brand rankings. With a market share of 15 per cent, Dell continued to be at the top. HP, which lost market share in the last two quarters, first losing the top slot to Dell and then the second spot to Acer, is back to the second position. The company saw market share rise from 11.2 in the previous quarter to 13.3 per cent in the quarter ended September 30.

Acer, which saw market share rise in the last two quarters, dropped to the fourth position, below Lenovo, which raised its market share to 12.1 per cent.
Multinational brands contributed to more than half the total PC shipments in the third quarter, with shipments from Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo, the top four vendors, representing 51.1 per cent of the market. HCL accounted for 5.6 per cent of PC shipments in the quarter. HCL was the only vendor among the top five to register a year-on-year decline in shipments.
