Chip maker Intel and the Central government are once again exploring the possibility of the company increasing its range of activities in India.

Intel currently carries out research and development activities in India and the government has been trying to get the company set up a chip fabrication unit here.

After meeting the representatives of Intel, Union Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, told the media on Sunday that announcements on Intel's plans in the country would have to come from the company's side.

Intel chairman, Craig Barett, called on Dayanidhi Maran in Chennai on Sunday, but Barett declined to speak to the mediapersons. However, Intel is scheduled to announce its immediate plans in India on Monday in New Delhi.

Maran said that Intel was interested in areas like education, training and supplying chips that could bring down the cost of personal computers. Barett has deputed a team to India to find ways that would help Intel supply a chip at a price that could bring down the overall cost of a computer, he added.
