The Rajasthan government has started putting in place a plan to make Jaipur a WiFi city by providing wireless Internet access throughout the city, as was announced by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in her budget speech earlier this year.

The project would create a digital infrastructure for an open-air Internet access and would help people make effective use of the wireless technology to achieve their goals while providing a world-class experience for visitors to the city as well.

"The state government, through the 'Jaipur WiFi City' initiative, aims to strengthen Jaipur's economy and to propel it as a world class city by providing wireless Internet access," a senior state government official said.

WiFi stands for wireless fidelity and is used to define any of the wireless technology. It is a high frequency wireless local area network through which Internet can be operated without any cable connection.

To achieve the aforesaid goal, the state government has already sought proposals from various service providers for a 'turnkey solution' for the wireless network.

The service providers have been asked to submit their profiles including financial and technological strengths, proposed business model and technology approach.

On the basis of the proposals, the state government proposes to come out with a policy whereby private service providers can set up their wireless network across the city.
