Telecommunication equipment major Nokia Siemens is planning to source components worth Euro 500 million, an increase of around 50 per cent compared to last year. Meanwhile, the company has developed renewable energy solutions for telecoms operators. The solution would help the operators to handle frequent power cuts in rural parts of India and will reduce the operating cost, according company’s senior official.

Speaking to Business Standard Nokia Siemens Networks Operations-Head Herbert Merz, who was here recently to inaugurate new 3G manufacturing production line at Oragadam facility, said that in 2009 the company had sourced components worth ¤350 million from India and this will be increased to around ¤500 million.

The company sources high-volume components locally such as the mechanicals, cables and packaging and are being exported to Europe and West Asia.

Nokia Siemens recently inaugurated its Chennai facility for the manufacture and distribution of mobile communications infrastructure in 2008, for an investment of $70 million. The facility, with until now was involved in the manufacture of 2G communication infrastructure for local and global customers.

Serving 240 million subscribers, or more than half of all 3G subscribers, via. the 172 operators who have deployed its 3G networks, Nokia Siemens Networks is the leading enabler of 3G globally.

NSN also developed a range of energy solutions for telecoms operators. The energy solutions, designed to reduce network operating costs, can lower the power consumption of telecoms networks by exploiting more efficient technology and renewable energy, said Samar Mittal, Head of Global Services Sales at Nokia Siemens Networks India.

The solution also allows for the profitable and efficient expansion of networks in rural and remote areas by reducing the dependency on oil and other energy sources which are threatened by escalating costs due to supply paucity, paving the way for a more cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly approach to extending connectivity, said Mittal.

He added that Nokia Siemens Networks Energy Solutions include energy saving site solution products, renewable energy products include solar panels, wind turbines, battery banks and others.

These services are provided as part of the Nokia Siemens Networks Energy Solutions: Consulting services, Site Acquisition, Project management, Network Planning and Optimization, Logistics, Construction Works Implementation, Operations and Maintenance, Customer trainings, Hardware services

“In India we had a few renewable energy trials sites with one leading operator,” said Mittal.

By using NSN’ products like Flexi Base Station, operators can cut their power consumption by up to 70 per cent at site level, and also improve energy efficiency in existing base station networks by up to 35- 40 per cent at site level, he added.
