The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) today set in motion the process of permitting operators to migrate to next-generation networks and provide different types of telecom services on a single network. |
At present, various types of telecom services are provided through separate networks. "The key aspects of the network are that these enable access through a variety of networks and, because they are based on Internet protocol (IP) technology, they not only offer much cheaper bandwidth, but also make available a wide variety of services," the regulator said in its consultation paper on "Issues Pertaining to Next Generation Networks". |
The regulator added that next-generation network promise to provide a number of benefits and opportunities for both service providers and end users by providing innovative services and applications through a common platform. |
The regulator has sought the views of all stakeholders including service providers and industry associations on issues such as whether next-generation networks are relevant for India, and if so, the time-frame for the industry to migrate to them, and the role of the regulator to ensure smooth migration. |
It has also sought views on technical issues such as the need for next-generation network specifications, adopting a technology neutral approach and addressing security concerns. |
On the regulatory front, the Trai has sought stakeholders' comments on whether regulatory initiatives were required on NGN, or, if there should only be "light touch" regulation on the matter. |
Operators in many developed countries like the UK, Japan, Singapore, Holland, Italy and Hong Kong have initiated the process of migration to NGN, the regulator added. |
