Last quarter, the company had announced a reduction in its staff variable pay as it did not achieve the internal targets.

"This quarter will not see any cut in variable pay. This is a sequential dip in net profit but from a year-on-year point we have done good," said Ajoyendra Mukherjee, vice-president, head-global human resources, TCS.

Mukherjee, who assumed charge in February, said while tackling attrition at the higher levels is clearly on his mind, he is also focusing on creating future leaders from an employee base of 111,407.

In terms of focus, Mukherjee has a three-point agenda. First, he wants to improve productivity of workforce. "While this can be achieved by tweaking certain operational levers, we also want to build competency and capability side. For which, we are improving our training infrastructure in our oversees centres such as Cincinnati, China, Brazil, Uruguay. Overall investments for training will be 2 per cent of the revenues," said Mukherjee.

The other two priorities are retaining high performers and developing leadership skills within the organisation. "To reorganise global operations, we need more people in leadership roles. To facilitate this, we plan to have dedicated HR teams in each business divisions," adds Mukherjee.

TCS is also planning to launch a scheme to attract the best talent from tier-I educational institutes for its R&D labs. "Despite the need to hire more from these institutes we have seen that over a period of time the number of people interested in taking on work from these institutes with us has been declining."

For FY09, the company has set a target of hiring around 30,000-35,000 people. The company has already issued 22,451 offer letters.
