Trend Micro solution for web threats

With internet penetration increasing, its just not the email that could be a carrier of viruses but also the web or the combination of email and web that hackers are using to target web surfers.

Users have high awareness levels of email spam and infection of viruses from email. However, the web has become a primary threat-infection vector for modern-day attacks and this awareness is lacking in consumers.

"There has been a five fold increase in the number of web threats from 2005 to 2007. On an average there are 0.5 million web threat attacks every month globally," said Niraj Kaushik, country manager "" sales, Trend Micro.

According to IDC the secure content and threat management market reached $11.6 billion in 2005. The web threat market is merging into the security content and threat management market. Besides also email and web threats are merging.

Explaining the need for a solution that provide feedback between these two areas, enabling networks to be centrally managed and protected from all of these threats, Trend Micro Inc, a network anti-virus and internet content security software and services provider, today revealed a new web threat protection technology Trend Micro Web Reputation Service.

The web reputation technology is a multi-layered approach dealing with evolving multi-component web threats that take advantage of the interactive nature of the internet.

"The service has built in intelligence which will inform the consumers of the credibility and reputation of a site before entering it, thus mitigating the risk," said Kaushik adding that incase the user's PC is already infected with a virus which then is trying to send information over the web, the solution would not allow web access to the virus to send the information.

This is a multi-layered, multiple threat defense solution that can be incorporated in every layer at the gateway, in the network, on the PC, and with other solutions 'in-the-cloud' working seamlessly together to proactively respond to new and emerging web threats.

The company will incorporate this service in all its products and will have a minimal increase in costs to cover it.

Besides, users can download the software code from its site and run it in their tool bars to disable malicious links.

Also, the company is in talks with various other companies to integrate web reputation service in its products. Trend Micro OfficeScan 8.0 will be the first corporate solution to have the new web reputation technology blended into its functionality.

The solution will allow mobile business users not on the corporate network protection whether on or off the network, and with no impact to servers, Trend Micro's in-the-cloud service also helps preserve IT resources and bandwidth.

Among consumers, social networking sites have become extremely popular, enabling the web community to actively interact with others.

Trend Micro recently announced TrendProtect, a service that continuously protects consumers against unwanted web content and hidden web threats whenever they are searching or browsing the internet.

Trend Micro has a database of over 300 million domains and registers over two billion hits daily. This visibility allows it to respond quickly and remediate new email and web threats.
