Twitter, the global micro-blogging internet platform, announced on Thursday that it had removed the 140-word limit for its Direct Messages. Users may now go up to 10,000 characters in doing so.
Direct Messages lets you have private conversations about the memes, news, movements, and events that unfold on Twitter.
“The idea being that Direct Messages should seem limitless!” announced the company. “Twitter aims to improve users’ messaging experience to give them the real estate to express themselves more freely and getting rid of the 140-character limit is another step in that direction.”

Twitter might have taken this step as competitors such as Facebook allows user to message as much as they wish. Earlier this year, Twitter launched Group Direct Messages, where multiple users could chat at the same time and any user could message another privately, irrespective of the fact that they might not be ‘following’ each other.
“There is incredible content on Twitter every day, from breaking news to live events and the aim is to create an experience that allows users to discuss powerful moments in an environment they’re comfortable with, to make the private side of Twitter as fulfilling as the public side,” said the company.
The update will roll-out to all users worldwide who use Twitter.com, TweetDeck and Twitter-owned and operated applications.
