Videocon Telecommunications Limited, a Videocon Group company would roll out its GSM services in Punjab by April 10 this year. Videocon will be the seventh GSM Mobile service operator in Punjab, the six other operators in the Punjab telecom circle being Airtel, BSNL, Vodafone Essar, Idea Cellular, Reliance Telecom and Tata Docomo, the GSM brand of Tata Teleservices Limited. “Videocon will launch its services in Punjab by April 10 this year to tap the Punjab market,” a source close to the development informed Business Standard.
The entry of Videocon, will further fuel the competition among the telecom players in the Punjab telecom circle. Apart from 6 existing GSM players, the state has also three CDMA players, Reliance Communication, Tata Teleservices and HFCL Connect. It is worth noting that Punjab has a tele-density of about 60 per cent as compared with the national average of 50 per cent. The total GSM subscriber base in Punjab as on February 28, 2010 was about 14.35 million excluding Reliance Telecom and Tata Docomo.
