WhatsApp CEO says focus on messaging, not ad gimmicks

The app, which used to be paid, is now free to download and costs $0.99 every year to use after the first year

WhatsApp, which has racked up 430 million active users, has annced that it would stay way from gimmicks like disappearing photos and games.

The app, which used to be paid, is now free to download and costs $0.99  every year to use after the first year.

According to techcrunch co-founder and CEO Jan Koum, said that the important thing for whatsapp is focus on messaging and not disappearing photos, in an apparent reference to auto-destruct photo-sharing service Snapchat.

He added that if people want to play games there are plenty of other sites and also a lot of great companies building services around advertising.
