Wynn Telecom aims at 5% market share in Gujarat

With its mobile handsets designed and priced for the rural areas and the youth segment, Wynn Telecom Limited, part of the Rs 930 crore SAR Group, aims to garner a five per cent share in the five lakh handsets per month market of Gujarat. While the company has launched in Gujarat seven models of its 'Wynncom' brand of mobile handsets, Wynn Telecom is hoping to add 13 more to its kitty by December 2010.

Talking about the company plans, Arvind Vohra, co-founder and managing director, Wynn Telecom said, "In a bid to stand out from the crowd Wynncom will be focusing on more VAS related features in its phones. Moreover, the company will be targeting rural areas as well as the youth segment since they are less brand conscious. While in Gujarat we are aiming at a market share of 5 per cent, nationally we intend to be the third largest Indian mobile handset manufacturer."

 

According to Vohra, the mobile handsets market in India is about 12.5-13 million handsets per month, while Gujarat has a market size of five lakh units per month.

While Wynn Telecom currently manufactures its handsets from China, the company is investing Rs 270 crore for setting up a greenfield mobile handset manufacturing plant in Himachal Pradesh. "We are in all investing Rs 500 crore to grow aggressively in the country. Around Rs 100 crore will be invested in the current fiscal for mobile handset launch across the country, and the remaining Rs 400 crore will be invested in the next financial year," said Vohra.

Of the Rs 400 crore, Rs 270 crore will be poured into the new plant, while roughly Rs 65 crore each will be invested in marketing and R&D, respectively. To be marketed under the brand name Wynncom, the mobile handsets have been priced in the range of Rs 1, 500 to Rs.4, 500. The mobile handset manufacturing plant is expected to begin production by August 2011 from Himachal Pradesh with a capacity of 11 million handsets per month.The flagship handset among the launched phones is Y50 &Y30, of which Wynncom Y50 is a dual SIM Qwerty phone pre-loaded with significant features like AIO messenger, social networking applications, and multimedia, priced at Rs 4,195.

Whereas Wynncom Y30 is dual SIM multimedia phone with dual speakers, 2 MP camera, FM radio with schedule recording, MP3 Player, and mobile tracker and has been priced at Rs 3,495.

Wynn Telecom is part of Rs 930 crore SAR Group.The group, with Luminous as its flagship brand in inverter, operates in 36 countries across the world and has its own manufacturing base in India and China.
