Secunderabad-based player in the telecom and energy sector, XL Telecom in association with Axesstel, Inc, has been awarded a Rs 98-crore tender from BSNL for supply of 3,65,000 Axesstel L800 fixed wireless desktop phones.

Speaking to Business Standard, Dinesh Kumar, managing director, XL Telecom, said, "We will have to execute this order in the next few months. While Axesstel will ship L800 phone kits in semi-knocked down form, we will assemble the kits, load the required software into phones, test the products and distribute to various BSNL depots."

California-based Axesstel is into design and development of fixed wireless voice and broadband data products. L800 is a fixed wireless phone that offers features like two-way SMS, caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, three-way calling and hands-free dialling.

The Rs 300-crore XL Telecom manufactures switch mode power supply systems and cable accessories apart from telecom equipment. Some of its clients include Reliance, BSNL and MTNL.

It also has a collaboration with Kyocera Wireless Corp for the manufacture of CDMA mobile handsets since the last five years. XL Telecom is now responsible for sales in the open market for the southern and western regions for Kyocera Wireless.

Meanwhile, XL Telecom will also be going for an initial public offer of around Rs 60 crore in the next couple of months. Anand Rathi Securities and Centrum Capital will be the lead managers for the issue.

At present, the company has an equity base of Rs 10.54 crore with the holding of the promoters being 51 per cent. Post issue, the equity base will increase to Rs 14.4 crore and the promoters' holding will come down to 38 per cent.

XL Telecom plans to set up an assembly line based on surface mount technology, which is basically a manufacturing process where components are attached on the surface of the printed circuit board, instead of being fitted with wire leads into holes in the circuit board.

The company is also looking at setting up an export-oriented manufacturing facility for solar panels. XL Telecom is planning to close this year with revenues of Rs 450 crore.
