Zensar Technologies is planning to make its first forays into tier-III cities driven by cost advantages and talent availability in the smaller towns, said vice-chairman and CEO Ganesh Natarajan recently.
“We are looking at entering not even tier-II but tier-III cities because I think that given issues of overcrowding and problems associated with attrition and the rising price of real estate, the future is not big campuses, but smaller operations based out of smaller cities like Haldia and Durgapur,” Natarajan told reporters in Kolkata.
The statement assumes significance in the context of the fact that the newly elected government of West Bengal has chosen the information technology (IT) sector to rescue the state’s beleaguered financial health and reduce unemployment numbers.
West Bengal IT minister had earlier stated that going forward, the West Bengal government will focus on the creation of IT clusters consisting of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in each district marking Haldia, Durgapur, Darjeeling and Siliguri as the first targets for IT clusters.
“The IT industry is manpower intensive. So while it provides for employment to many people it does not need a lot of land because it can be developed vertically. We propose an IT hub to be set up in each district of the state, so that the youth of Bengal does not have to venture out in search of jobs,” Chatterjee said.
