The IT ministry is working on a mechanism to assess safety and trust elements in artificial intelligence (AI) solutions but does not want to start with a regulation as it may hurt innovation in the AI space, a top official said on Thursday.
Speaking at CII's Global Economic Policy Forum, Ministry of Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan said the government has broadly addressed key regulations barring a couple of the issues like copyright and existential crisis.
He said under the IndiaAI mission, the government has tried to make a subtle distinction between responsible AI as defined by the West -- which is not expected to be regulated by the government -- and safe and trusted AI.
"Safe and trusted AI is when you do the innovation, try and be responsible about it but there would be an assessment. We will try and see that it is safe and trusted in a manner that works for everybody. That is the other space that we are working on right now. We don't want to start with regulation, and

Hundreds of Syrian refugees gathered at two border crossings in southern Turkey on Monday, eagerly anticipating their return home following the fall of President Bashar Assad's government.
Many arrived at the Cilvegozu and Oncupinar border gates at daybreak, draped in blankets and coats. Some camped by border barriers, warming themselves with makeshift fires or resting on the cold ground. The crossings correspond to the Bab al-Hawa and Bab al-Salameh gates on the Syrian side of the border.
Among those waiting at Cilvegozu was 28-year-old Muhammed Zin, who was excited at the prospect of returning home. He fled Damascus in 2016 and has been living and working in Istanbul.

The turbulent relations between Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and the INDIA bloc came to a head on Monday, with opposition camp sources saying they are considering submitting a notice "very soon" for moving a resolution to remove the vice president from his office.
Sources said though the Congress has spearheaded the move for bringing in a motion to remove Vice President and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar and has brought several opposition leaders of the INDIA bloc on board, it is yet to finalise whether to move forward with it or not.
No decision was taken on the move after discussions within, they said, adding another meeting would take place on Tuesday morning.

Airlines in India have reported 809 hoax bomb threats in the last five years, with 719 in 2024 alone, as per data tabled in Parliament.
"Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has information of a total of 809 hoax bomb threats received by airlines since 2020," Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha on Monday.
According to the data shared by the minister, four hoax bomb threat messages were reported by the airlines in 2020 and two in 2021.
In 2022, airlines in India reported 13 hoax bomb threat messages, which rose to 71 in 2023, as per the data.
In 2024, 719 hoax bomb threat messages have been reported by the airlines, according to the data.
Aviation security regulator Bureau of Civil Aviation Security has mandated robust protocols for handling such threats, the minister said.
Moreover, a detailed contingency plan -- Bomb Threat Contingency Plan (BTCP) -- is in place to handle such threats. As a part of BTCP, every airport has

The literacy rate in rural India recorded a jump of more than 10 percentage points in the past decade, the Lok Sabha was informed on Monday.
It was also told that the literacy rate among women rose 14.50 percentage points during this period.
The information was shared by Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary in response to a written question about government efforts, challenges and strategies in achieving 100 per cent rural literacy.
According to the statistics shared by Chaudhary, rural India's literacy rate rose from 67.77 per cent in 2011 to 77.50 per cent in 2023-24 among individuals aged seven and above.
Female literacy rose from 57.93 per cent to 70.40 per cent during this period. Male literacy improved from 77.15 per cent to 84.7 per cent.
"In order to improve the literacy rate, including rural literacy among adults, the government of India has launched several centrally-sponsored schemes and programmes, such as the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, Saakshar Bharat

DME Development Limited (DMEDL), an arm of NHAI, has raised Rs 775 crore through issuance of green bonds in roads and highways sector, an official statement said on Monday.
The proceeds from the issue of 'green bonds' has been used for activities such as expenditure on avenue plantation, median plantation, construction of animal underpasses, natural stormwater drainage, streetlight on renewable energy (solar), waste recycling and reuse and rainwater harvesting, the statement said.
"DMEDL today successfully raised Rs 775 crore from the first of its kind issue of 'green bonds' in roads and highways sector," the Ministry of Road, Transport and Highways said.
NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar Yadav said, "This first of its kind initiative for the roads and highway sector will set a benchmark and encourage participation from a diverse set of investors."
