India's circular economy could generate a market value of over USD 2 trillion and create 10 million jobs by 2050, the country's G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant said Monday.
Addressing an event here, Kant further said the circular economy can be a driver of growth, and this transition not only promises cost savings but also positions India to capitalise on the global circular economy market.
"This is a huge opportunity because, by 2050, India's circular economy could generate a market value of over USD 2 trillion and create close to 10 million jobs," he said.
Currently, the size of the Indian economy is USD 3.7 trillion.
Noting that industrialisation and urbanisation are creating an unsustainable India, Kant said, "We need circular economy as a beacon of hope".
The country's natural resources are depleted at an unsustainable pace, generating massive amounts of waste.
While pointing out that India is generating about close to 1.6 lakh tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, he said this .

Delhi's groundwater resources are heavily strained, with the overall extraction rate at 99.13 per cent, categorised as "critical", while the situation in Bengaluru is even more alarming with the overall groundwater extraction rate at 150.84 per cent, the Jal Shakti ministry said on Monday.
Responding to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Minister of State for Jal Shakti, Raj Bhushan Choudhary, said that while desalination technology using reject heat from nuclear reactors is operational at Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, it is not widely applicable.
Instead, the reverse osmosis (RO) membrane technology is deemed suitable for treating groundwater, the minister said.
The government has also assessed groundwater dynamics in urban areas like Delhi and Bengaluru, but similar data for Mumbai is unavailable due to insufficient data collection.

The commerce ministry's investigation arm DGTR has started a probe into an alleged jump in steel imports and it will also consult MSME downstream industries before making its recommendations, a top government official said on Monday.
Commerce Secretary Sunil Barthwal said that the ministry has received a request from the steel ministry for conducting the safeguard investigations.
"The DGTR is doing it and in the investigation, they look at the whole value chain. So we are looking at not only the HR (hot-rolled) and CR (cold-rolled) coil (steel products) which is coming to India, they are also looking at the requirement of downstream industry whether there is a production imbalance or whether it is an injury because of excess capacity in steel," he told reporters here.
He said that all these stakeholders are being consulted including MSMEs as well as the downstream industries, "then only the DGTR will make a recommendation" in this regard.

Allahabad High Court judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav, who purportedly gave controversial statements at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad function, appeared before the Supreme Court collegium on Tuesday, sources said.
According to the sources, Yadav appeared before the collegium headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and was asked to put forth his version on the statements made.
The top court on December 10 took note of news reports over the statements and sought a report from the Allahabad High Court on the issue.
"The Supreme Court has taken note of newspaper reports of a speech given by Mr Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav, a sitting judge of the High Court of Judicature at Allahabad. The details and particulars have been called from the high court and the matter is under consideration," an official statement had said.
