The market call in 2014 is more challenging for us than we can remember in a while. It requires us to anticipate what the US Federal Reserve will do, second-guess the Indian election results and then forecast the government's policy response. If all three go the market's way, we could be in a bull phase. However, if two of three go against the market, we could see significant downsides to the indices.Both outcomes are aptly reflected in our risk-reward scenarios for the BSE Sensex, with a bull case upside of 25 per cent and a bear case with a downside of 17 per cent.The call becomes more complicated because it is an election year and the country needs assertive policy action. Thus, the market could gyrate around election outcomes. We do not see a sustainable shift in fundamentals for us to back stocks which are, at best, trading at middling valuations.Global liquidity is strong but waning at the margin. Indices are past their 200 daily moving average (DMA) for the first time since February 2011. Sector rotation has hit a 15-month high. Cyclicals are back and the so-called defensives have underperformed. These are tell-tale signs of a new bull market. Is this a case of the market telling us where the fundamentals are heading or is this a head fake? Simply put, are we in a new bull market?.

A new bull market?

An upcycle in earnings, strong global liquidity and supportive valuations should help the market rise around 25 per cent in 2013. We expect Sensex earnings growth of 10 per cent and 19 per cent in FY2013 and FY2014, respectively, and hence, markets to rise largely on higher earnings. Of course, there are risks to this view from a major risk-off in the world, domestic policy hiatus, early elections and rising oil prices.

The National Conference on Sunday ruled out joining the BJP-led NDA and dismissed as baseless a media report in this regard.
This news being peddled by certain so-called journalists is nothing but a blatant lie, driven by malicious intent to mislead the people of Jammu and Kashmir, National Conference chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq said.
He was reacting to a report published in a newspaper that claimed Jammu and Kashmir's ruling party might be preparing grounds for a return to the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in exchange for the Union Territory's statehood.
"It is disgraceful and irresponsible for anyone to spread such baseless rumours... Let me challenge the individual behind this fabrication: name the so-called 'top BJP leadership' that Omar Abdullah alleged to have met, or immediately retract your claim and issue a public apology," he said in a post on X.
Sadiq also said Abdullah's meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi was held in full public view.

Against the backdrop of Parliament witnessing poor productivity due to disruptions, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Sunday called for accountability of lawmakers and said people would force them to think why they were sent to Parliament.

After two weeks of buying, FPIs turned net sellers in Indian equities this week, with a net withdrawal of Rs 976 crore amid a strengthening US dollar and steady rise in US 10-year bond yields, impacting investor sentiment.
Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) began the week on a positive note, investing Rs 3,126 crore in equities during the first two trading sessions (December 16-20).
However, the trend reversed in the latter half of the week, with FPIs offloading equities worth over Rs 4,102 crore in the subsequent three sessions. This resulted in an overall net outflow of Rs 976 crore during the week, data from National Securities Depository Limited showed.
Despite this short-term reversal, the broader December trend remains positive. FPIs have infused Rs 21,789 crore into Indian equities so far this month, reflecting continued confidence in India's economic growth potential and its resilient markets.

The accumulated losses of state public sector enterprises (PSEs) rose from Rs 3,953.70 crore in 2020-21 to Rs 4,778.70 crore in 2022-23, while the profit earned by 13 SPSEs stood at Rs 20.21 crore as on September 30, 2023, according to a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on finances tabled in the Assembly on Saturday.
