Southeast Asian foreign ministers gathered Sunday for their first meeting this year under the regional bloc's new chair, Malaysia, seeking a breakthrough over Myanmar's drawn-out civil war and territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
The retreat on the idyllic northern resort island of Langkawi was the first major meeting of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations hosted by Malaysia.
Officials said it aims to chart the bloc's direction for the year as it tries to resolve Myanmar's deadly four-year crisis and tensions over China's increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea.
Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan said ASEAN must bolster unity and make economic integration a top priority amid global uncertainties and the US-China rivalry in the region. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to inaugurate the southern campus of the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM) and the 10th Battalion campus of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) near Vijayawada, along with several other projects, on Sunday.
The Union Minister will also be the chief guest at the 20th Foundation Day celebrations of the NDRF at Kondapavuluru in Krishna district, official sources said.
Shah who arrived here on Saturday night was received at Vijayawada airport by IT Minister Nara Lokesh and other leaders.

India's space sector wants the government to spend more on space-based services, slash taxes to spur growth of start-ups and introduce a production-linked incentive scheme for them in the Union Budget.
The sector has put forward its demand ahead of the Union Budget for 2025-26 on February 1.
The Indian space economy is valued at 8.4 billion dollars and the private sector has just about started making a mark by building satellites and launch systems eyeing a manifold increase over the next decade.
"Probably something like a production-linked incentive scheme for the space sector would be helpful from a budget standpoint. A lot of infrastructure development needs to be done for space as well. Saif Ali Khan's wife and actress Kareena Kapoor Khan has informed the police that the intruder who entered their house in Mumbai got aggressive during the scuffle but did not touch jewellery kept in the open, an official said on Saturday.
The police recorded the actress's statement following the attack at the Bollywood star couple's apartment in Bandra in the early hours of Thursday, the official said.
An intruder attacked Khan (54) after entering his 12th-floor apartment in the Satguru Sharan building. The actor sustained multiple stab wounds, including on his neck, and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.
The official said Kareena, in her statement, said the intruder got very aggressive during the scuffle with Saif, stabbing him multiple times. He, however, did not touch the jewellery kept in the open.
He said the police are yet to record Khan's statement.

The rupee declined 4 paise to 86.44 against the US dollar in early trade on Thursday amid a firm American currency, rising crude oil prices and outflow of foreign funds.
However, positive domestic equity markets resisted a sharp fall in Indian currency, forex traders said.
At the interbank foreign exchange, the rupee opened at 86.42 and slipped further to 86.44 against the greenback in initial deals, trading 4 paise lower from its previous close.
The rupee settled with a gain of 13 paise at 86.40 against the dollar on Wednesday, a day after rebounding 17 paise from its lowest-ever level.
Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback's strength against a basket of six currencies, was trading 0.04 per cent higher at 108.96.
Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, rose 0.37 per cent to USD 82.33 per barrel in futures trade.
