Bangladesh's interim government on Monday said it has sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi seeking the extradition of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina from India, a move that may further strain the ties between the two countries.
India confirmed receiving the 'note verbale' or diplomatic communication from the Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi but refrained from making any comment on it.
Bangladesh's de facto foreign minister Touhid Hossain said Dhaka wants Hasina back to face the judicial process.
"We have sent a note verbale to the Indian government saying that Bangladesh wants her back here for the judicial process," Hossain told reporters in Dhaka.
In New Delhi, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said: "We confirm that we have received a Note Verbale from the Bangladesh High Commission today in connection with an extradition request."
"At this time, we have no comment to offer on this matter," he said in response to a question.

Parliamentary sources said the first meeting of the Joint Committee on bills for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, chaired by BJP member P P Chaudhary, is likely to be an introductory one with officials briefing the panel on the two bills to implement a long-cherished election promise of the BJP.
The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill were introduced in the Lok Sabha last week and referred to the joint committee of Parliament on Friday, the last day of the Winter Session.
The government decided to increase the committee's strength from 31 to 39 as more political parties expressed the desire to be part of the exercise to examine the two draft legislations on simultaneous elections.

China Monday backed Panama President Jose Raul Mulino's assertion of his country's sovereignty over the Panama Canal against US President-elect Donald Trump's threat to regain control of it if the central American country doesn't stop charging "exorbitant prices" to US ships and naval vessels.
The 82-km Panama Canal cuts across the central American nation and is the main link between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
If shipping rates are not lowered "we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, quickly and without question, Trump told a crowd of supporters in Arizona on Sunday.
His remarks prompted a quick rebuke from Mulino, who said, "every square metre" of the canal and surrounding area belongs to his country.
Panama's sovereignty and independence were non-negotiable, BBC quoted Mulino as saying.
Asked for her comments at a media briefing here, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning referred to Mulino's assertion of Panama's sovereignty.

Two individuals, including a former employee of Deloitte India, on Monday settled with capital markets regulator Sebi a case pertaining to the alleged violation of insider trading rules by paying Rs 74 lakh towards settlement fee.
Nimai Parekh and Rahil Dalal (applicants) had proposed to settle the matter by neither "admitting nor denying the findings of fact and conclusions of law", Sebi said.
"In exercise of the powers...and in terms of the settlement regulations, it is hereby ordered that any proceedings that may be initiated for the violations are settled in respect of the applicants," Sebi's whole-time member Kamlesh C Varshney said in the settlement order.
Sebi conducted an investigation in the scrips of HDFC Ltd and HDFC Bank Ltd, so as to ascertain whether any suspected entities on the basis of information relating to amalgamation/merger, had traded in the scrips, and thereby violated PIT (Prohibition of Insider Trading) rules.

"In view of the acceptance of the settlement terms and the receipt of the settlement amount, the adjudication proceedings initiated against the applicant (Kalyani Investment Company) vide show cause notice (SCN) dated March 19, 2024, is disposed of," Sebi's adjudicating officer Amit Kapoor said in the settlement order on Friday.
