I first became conscious of politics as a student of economics in Kirorimal College, Delhi University in 1969 when I was elected to the students union executive committee. The same year I was persuaded by a senior to stand for the Delhi University Students Union's Supreme Council. The latter body elected the DUSU office bearers. These were heady days with some of the leading pro- Naxalites students, students like Avdesh Sinha, who later became a highly respected IAS officer, and Rabindra Ray now a sociology professor in Delhi University. Another leading star who has written on his experiences was Dilip Simeon. I also became Left but did not agree with armed struggle. At this stage I watched the mainstream Left parties and along with Marxist texts read some Left Party pamphlets.However, a deeper and much more expansive debate was snowballing where I joined in JNU in 1972. Uttar Pradesh Jal Shakti and Namami Gange Minister Swatantra Dev Singh said on Wednesday that the state is on track to surpass one billion tourist visits, generating Rs 3 lakh crore in economic activity.
Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of a 180-foot-tall Shiva temple being constructed by the Ram Janki Temple Trust, Singh credited this surge in tourism to the development of corridors across various religious sites and the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
"So far, 60 crore tourists have visited the state due to corridor development. Additionally, we estimate around 45 crore visitors for Prayagraj's Maha Kumbh. With these numbers, Uttar Pradesh will surpass one billion tourists," Singh said.
The minister highlighted the shift in public sentiment towards religion and safety in the state.

The government has disbursed total incentive of Rs 331.86 crore to 18 of 42 beneficiaries under the telecom PLI scheme as on October 31, Parliament was informed on Wednesday.
Minister of State for Telecom Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar in a written reply to the Lok Sabha said as on October 31, the PLI (production-linked incentives) beneficiaries have reported employment of 25,359 people and total sales of Rs 68,708 crore, including exports of Rs 13,007 crore.
According to data shared by the minister, Jabil Circuit India leads the chart of beneficiary companies under the list with a total incentive of Rs 78.62 crore.
It is followed by Nokia Solutions and Networks India Pvt Ltd that has received incentives of Rs 46.92 crore, Tejas Networks Rs 32.66 crore, Flextronics Technologies (India) Rs 30.6 crore, Commscope India Rs 25.95 crore, NeoLync Tele Communications Rs 21.79 crore, Rising Stars Hi-Tech Rs 20.33 crore.

France's highest court has upheld an appeal court decision which had found former President Nicolas Sarkozy guilty of corruption and influence peddling while he was the country's head of state.
Sarkozy, 69, faces a year in prison, but is expected to ask to be detained at home with an electronic bracelet  as is the case for any sentence of two years or less.
He was found guilty of corruption and influence peddling by both a Paris court in 2021 and an appeals court in 2023 for trying to bribe a magistrate in exchange for information about a legal case in which he was implicated.
"The convictions and sentences are therefore final, a Court of Cassation statement on Wednesday said.
Sarkozy, who was France's president from 2007 to 2012, retired from public life in 2017 though still plays an influential role in French conservative politics. He was among the guests who attended the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral earlier this month.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday condoled the loss of lives in a boat accident off the Mumbai coast and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of each deceased.
Thirteen persons died and 99 others were rescued after a Navy craft crashed into a ferry off the Mumbai coast on Wednesday, the Navy said.
At about 4 pm, a Navy craft undergoing engine trials lost control and collided with passenger ferry Neel Kamal off Karanja near Mumbai, the Navy said in a statement. The ferry was carrying passengers from the Gateway of India to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination.
"The boat mishap in Mumbai is saddening. Condolences to the bereaved families. I pray that the injured recover soon. Those affected are being assisted by the authorities," Modi was quoted as saying by his office in a post on X.
