ISRO chairman S Somanath on Thursday said that there was a lack of sufficient aerodynamic testing facilities in India and therefore, huge investments need to be made to create such facilities.
Speaking at the SAROD 2024 event organised here by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Somanath emphasised the importance of scaling up the country's computational capability.
The ISRO chairman said that with the advancements in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), there was an initial line of thought that aerodynamic testing facilities were no longer required as most of the problems could be identified and solved computationally through simulations.
"So, many of the test programs that were required to be done for the future aero vehicles were actually cut down and at one point we were told to do more simulations than testing.
But, as time goes by, we realised that this is not the case. It became clear that the complementary nature of analysis and simulation with testing will continue. I

Over 77 per cent of Earth's land experienced a drier climate during the three decades leading up to 2020, compared to the previous 30-year period, according to a report released by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) on Monday.
During the same period, global drylands expanded by approximately 4.3 million square kilometres  an area nearly a third larger than India  now covering more than 40 per cent of the Earth's land.
The report, launched at the 16th conference of the UNCCD in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, warned that if efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions fail, another 3 per cent of the world's humid areas are projected to transform into drylands by the end of this century.
Meanwhile, the number of people living in drylands has doubled to 2.3 billion over the past three decades. Models suggest that as many as 5 billion could inhabit drylands by 2100 in a worst-case climate change scenario.

The Supreme Court refused to entertain on Monday a plea challenging the results of the CLAT-PG 2025 examination.
A bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, which was hearing the plea that contested the provisional answer key released for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) for postgraduate admissions, advised the petitioners to move the Delhi High Court with their grievances.
The bench, while refusing to entertain the plea, underscored the top court cannot act as the court of first instance in such matters and flagged concerns about delays in the release of examination results due to interventions by the apex court.
"We cannot be the court of first instance... We have on enough occasions said this. We have judgments where delays in results due to OMR sheet issues stretched up to eight years. Please go to the high court," the chief justice of India said.
The bench, however, granted the petitioners liberty to approach the high court, stating, "We are not inclin

Andhra Pradesh power distribution companies have decided to procure about 2,000 mw of power from SECI out of the total 7000 mw in demand for the agricultural sector for the next fiscal, as per the latest filing by these companies with the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission.
The move comes weeks after the Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) agreement with Andhra discoms became controversial after the US charged Adani Group chairman Gautam Adani in a years-long scheme to allegedly pay USD 250 million bribe to Indian officials including those from Andhra, in exchange for favourable solar power contracts in 2021 when the YSRCP was in power. The allegation has been refuted by the Indian conglomerate.

Speaking at the Rising Rajasthan Global Investment Summit which started on Monday, CEO and MD of the company Praveer Sinha said the company's investment roadmap was aimed at making Rajasthan a power surplus state through a range of initiatives.
"Tata Power's clean energy roadmap for the state would significantly contribute to India's goal of becoming net-zero carbon by 2070 and the state's ambition to emerge as the next clean energy hub in the country," Sinha told reporters after the inauguration ceremony.
