Chambal Fertilisers stops urea production at Kota plant

Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals Ltd, a part of the KK Birla group, has stopped operation at its urea manufacturing unit at Kota (Rajasthan) due to reported malfunctioning of the boiler unit at the plant. “One of the company's urea plants at Gadepan, District Kota, Rajasthan (Gadepan - I) has tripped on February 15, 2015 due to sudden failure of synthesis loop boiler. The plant is expected to resume production of urea by end February 2015,” said Chambal Fertilisers in a BSE filing on February 16, 2015.
 
This is the second time in less than one year that the production at the urea plant in Kota had to be stopped due to accidental glitches. In August 2014, a leakage in ammonia synthesis gas converter disrupted urea production at Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals’ Kota plant.

Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited has two nitrogenous fertiliser (urea) plants - Gadepan-I & Gadepan-II - located at Gadepan having a combined capacity to produce about 2 million MT of urea per annum. Last week, the company had announced the temporary shut down of Gadepan-II urea unit due to unfavourable policy of the Government of India for production beyond 100% capacity of the urea plant for the financial year 2014-15. Chambal Fertilisers is expected to resume operations at Gadepan-II unit in the last week of March or first week of April 2015.
