Siemens to supply gear units to BHEL for 3 years

The Siemens Drive Technologies Division will supply large gear units and gear components for vertical mills to Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) to cover their overall demand in the coming three years. BHEL is a leading manufacturer of mechanical and electrical components for power plant and energy technology.

Since India's demand for energy is growing rapidly, coal-fired power plants are constantly being built and expanded. The Flender gear units from Siemens are deployed in vertical mills with an output of 800 and 1000 kW, which are used for coal grinding in the power plants. “Due to their rugged design, these powerful and reliable drives are ideal for the harsh ambient conditions in power plants and permit smooth operation. The value of the order is in the (Euro) double-digit million range,” said Siemens in a press release.

The Flender gear units supplied by Siemens consist of a combination of a bevel gear stage with a planetary stage. Due to the special design developed by Siemens for use in coal grinding, a high power density is achieved and at the same time the forces from the grinding operations are transferred to the foundation via the gear casing. The operating company thus benefits from smooth operation and very fine coal grinding, which is required for efficient combustion.

“We see this major order as a convincing vote of confidence from BHEL in reliability of the Flender gear units and the commitment and cooperation of our employees,” said Dr Bernhard Hoffmann, Head of the Mechanical Drives Segment in the Siemens Industry Sector.
