Filatex India Ltd, the polyester filament yarns producer, has begun commercial production of 100 metric tonne per day (mtpd) of polyester fully drawn yarn (FDY) at its existing unit in Dahej (Gujarat). “The company has commenced commercial production for manufacturing 100 mtpd of polyester fully drawn yarn at its existing unit in Dahej from March 4, 2016,” said Filatex in a BSE filing on March 5, 2016.

Filatex is also in the process of installing about 40 texturising machines at its existing unit at Dahej. Two texturising machines have been installed of which commercial production has also been started with effect from March 4, 2016. The remaining machines would be installed in phases and likely to be completed by September 2016.

India's yarn production has been witnessing consistent growth backed by rising demand for man-made fibres in the textiles industry. Total domestic demand for polyester fibre was at 3.6 million metric tonne (MT) in 2014-15, up 12.5 percent compared to 3.2 million MT in 2013-14.

Polyester fibre demand is estimated to grow at 8-10 percent during the 2016-18 owing to price stability, competitiveness of polyester fibre over cotton fibre and new applications in technical textiles. Filatex intends to tap this increasing demand with the expansion of its capacity.

Filatex, which has integrated manufacturing facilities at Dahej, Dadra and Noida (UP), produces polyester filament yarn, polypropylene filament yarn, draw texturise yarn, fully drawn yarn, textile grade chips, narrow customised fabrics and monofilament yarns.
