Former captain Virat Kohli took charge of the Indian team in the third T20 international match against Afghanistan at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Wednesday, January 17 as Rohit Sharma, who hit a century early, could take the field in the second innings.
Virat last captained the Indian T20 team in the 2021 World Cup, after which he announced that he was quitting the T20 captaincy and Rohit Sharma was given the command of the team.
Since BCCI did not name any vice-captain for the three-match series against Afghanistan, Kohli, the most senior guy in the team assumed the responsibility naturally. Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja, all of whom have been deputy to Rohit in the recent past, were not part of this series.
Kohli, who was out of golden duck in the match, was seen leading the Indian unit in the huddle when they came out to the field. Rohit later joined the team eventually, Shubman Gill replaced the Indian skipper as a substitute fielder in the match.
Rohit had smashed an unbeaten 121 off just 69 balls and added 190 for the fifth wicket with Rinku Singh to take India to 212/4 in 20 overs after they were left reeling at 22/4 in 4.3 overs.
