"Always wanted to tour Australia and do well": Jaiswal
Yashasvi Jaiswal credited his fearless approach and brave decision-making for his stellar 161 against Australia in the ongoing first Test at Perth. Speaking at the post-day press conference, the young opener termed the knock a "special moment" in his career, especially as it came in just his second innings on Australian soil.
"I always wanted to tour Australia and do well, and this knock is very important for me. Playing with a fearless mindset and believing in myself has always been my mantra. Scoring a hundred against the world's best bowlers in their home conditions is an amazing experience," Jaiswal said.
A strong partnership and a new-ball plan
Jaiswal's innings, combined with KL Rahul's composed 77, resulted in a 201-run opening stand, laying the groundwork for India's commanding 533-run target. Reflecting on his approach, Jaiswal admitted that the first innings, where he was dismissed for a duck, was a learning experience.
"The wicket was seaming more in the first innings, and we discussed how to handle the new ball better in the second. It was crucial for the team that I negate the early threat, leaving the right balls and playing with discipline," Jaiswal explained.
"Small targets led to a big knock"
Jaiswal revealed that he focused on small, achievable goals during his innings, breaking it down session by session.
"I never thought I would score such a big hundred. My focus was on taking it session by session. Rahul bhai's guidance during our partnership was invaluable. Whenever I felt nervous, he reminded me to stay calm and focused. That support really helped me navigate challenging moments," he said.
Prepared for Perth's bounce
Discussing the challenges posed by the Perth pitch, Jaiswal highlighted the team's preparation for the bounce and pace.
"We knew the ball would bounce here, so we had a camp ahead of the Test where we practised in similar conditions. It was about figuring out the right mindset and learning what shots to play. Hard work in the nets really paid off," he said.
Jaiswal's fearless century, built on meticulous preparation and sharp focus, has set the tone for India’s impressive performance, showcasing the young batter's potential to thrive on the big stage.
