Resuming the second session post Lunch, Australia added 47 more runs to their total before losing the last three wickets. Carey scored 48 while Cummins added nine runs. India will start its innings to try and get over the mammoth Australian first innings total.
Earlier in the day, Steven Smith brought up his 31st hundred, seventh in England, most by any batter other than Sir Don Bradman. Travis Head too reached 150. But it was after these two milestones that Indian bowlers got their act together.
Mohammed Siraj removed Head with a down-the-leg short ball, which took the edge and went to Bharat behind the stumps. Mohammed Shami then got Cmeron Green caught behind and there were two wickets on the trot.
Shardul Thakur's first ball, way outside off fetched him the wicket of Smith was throwing his bat at it and chopped the ball back on his stumps. Mitchell Starc was run out by Axar Patel who hit the stumps while diving at mid-off. He was on as a substitute for Siraj. Eventually, Pat Cummins and Alex Carey managed to hold on to the fort as Australia ended the first session at 422/7.

Shardul Thakur was introduced into the attack and on the very first ball he managed to get rid of the dangerous Steve Smith. He hanged the ball outside off, Smith went for an exaggerated drive while being too far from the length of the ball. His body and the bat had almost a half feet gap, and as a result, he could only manage to drag the ball back on the stumps. Australia are now six down.
