Australia survived a scare against New Zealand by five runs in the first match on the double-header day on Saturday, October 28 in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. The Aussies had to wait till the very last ball where six runs were required by the Kiwis to win the match at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. Chasing 389 to win, Rachin Ravindra hit a brilliant century while Jimmy Neesham kept the Blackcaps alive till the very end with his 39-ball 58 effort.

After nearly 25 dull games, the World Cup witnessed back-to-back close games after South Africa's one-wicket win against Pakistan in Chennai on October 28. This also became the match with the most runs scored in a World Cup game as it witnessed 771 runs in 100 overs.

Earlier, Australia, after being put to bat first by New Zealand captain Tom Latham, posted a mammoth 388/10 in 49.4 overs. Travis Head, playing his first match of the tournament, hit a century while David Warner made 81. New Zealand dropped fat too many catches and as a result could not restrict the Aussies to a smaller score. Glenn Phillips was the pick of the bowlers for the Kiwis, finishing with figures of 3/37 in his 10 overs.

Both teams made one change each in their Playing 11s. Travis Head walked straight into the Australia Playing 11 with Cameron Green paving the way for explosive opener. Meanwhile, New Zealand have to made a forced change as Mark Chapman missed out the game due to calf niggle. James Neesham have replaced Chapman in New Zealand's XI.

This is not at all ideal running from Neesham. There should have never been a doubt about taking two runs. It was a full toss and maybe a no-ball for height. But the umpire didn’t give it and then Neesham tried to run two to get it down to 5 from two balls. Now it is 6 needed off 1 ball.

No runs off the last ball and it would mean that Australia win by 5 runs. However, Neesham is still in disbelief in the dressing room.
