Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Kannauj, the party announced on Wednesday, two days after it had declared another candidate for the Uttar Pradesh seat.

On Monday, the SP HAD declared Tej Pratap Yadav as its candidate from the seat.

The party said Akhilesh Yadav will now file his papers on Thursday, when nominations begin.

Lashing out on the Congress amid the row on Sam Pitroda's statement on inheritance tax, Prime Minister Modi today claimed that the Congress wants to snatch the assets and rights of people's children.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said those who call themselves ‘deshbakt' are scared of the ‘X-ray' of caste census and asserted that no force can stop it. “As soon as our government is formed, the first thing that would be done is caste census,” Gandhi said.

The Nationalist Congress Party (SP) has recorded a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI) over the symbol of a trumpet-like instrument given to an independent candidate contesting from its stronghold, Baramati, in Maharashtra's Pune district.
The ECI has allotted a trumpet-like symbol to independent candidate Shaikh Soyalshah Yunusshah and has identified it as "tutari," the party claimed. Laxmikant Khabiya, the poll representative of the party's candidate, Supriya Sule, said that there is a similarity in both names, which can cause confusion among voters. The poll body has allotted "a man blowing turha" (a traditional trumpet) as the poll symbol for the NCP (SP). Baramati is the home turf of the Pawar family, and Sule, the daughter of Sharad Pawar, is seeking a straight fourth term from the constituency, which will go to polls in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 7.

Following incidents of violence during the first phase of voting for the Lok Sabha elections and state assembly elections on April 19,  re-polling is set to take place on  Wednesday in Arunachal Pradesh. The Election Commission of India (ECI) had directed on Sunday that re-polling for the Assembly polls in eight stations would begin at 6 am and conclude at 2 pm. Reports of violence and damage to Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) emerged during the assembly elections in Arunachal Pradesh, PTI reported citing a poll official.

Congress says no plans to introduce inheritance tax, distances itself from Pitroda's remarks

The Congress on Wednesday asserted that it has no plans to introduce inheritance tax in the country as a row erupted over the remarks by its leader Sam Pitroda, who also later said that his comments on the issue had nothing to with the party policy. Pitroda had spoken about inheritance tax in the US while delving into the issue of redistribution of health. As the BJP latched on it to target the Congress, the opposition party first distanced itself from the remarks of the US-based president of its overseas wing and then launched a counter-offensive claiming it was the BJP that wanted to impose an 'inheritance tax'. LS polls: Can't control elections or pass directions on basis of suspicion, SC on EVM

The Supreme Court said on Wednesday it cannot "control the elections" or issue directions simply because doubts have been raised about the efficacy of Electronic Voting Machines (EVM), as it reserved its judgement on a clutch of petitions claiming the polling devices can be tinkered with to manipulate the results. The court said it cannot change the thought process of those doubting the advantages of polling machines and advocating going back to ballot papers. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta reserved its verdict on a batch of pleas seeking complete cross-verification of votes cast using EVMs with Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT), after taking note of the answers to queries it had posed to the Election Commission.
