Two-day holiday for institutes in Kozhikode following Nipah outbreak

In the wake of the Nipah outbreak in this north Kerala district, a holiday has been declared for all educational institutions here on Thursday and Friday.

The holiday was declared by Kozhikode District Collector A Geetha who in a Facebook post said educational institutions can arrange online classes on the two days for students.

However, there will be no change in university exams schedule, she added.

Narratives pernicious, sinister: V-P Jagdeep Dhankhar slams Rahul Gandhi    

In a veiled dig at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Wednesday cautioned against narrataives that are "pernicious, sinister and anti-national in charecter are floated periodically abroad" at a time when the country was making "phenomenal progress" and emerging as a "global destination of investment and opportunity".

Speaking at the inauguration of the renovated library of the Indian Council of World Affairs in the national capital on Wednesday, the Vice President questioned if the country, home to "one-sixth of humanity" could "afford disturbance to be weaponised as a political power" when it was making repid strides across sectors.

Terming the country's progress as "phenomenal and unimaginable", the Vice President said, "Narratives that are pernicious, sinister, and anti-national in character are floated periodically. Some people get upset after seeing the development of India. You can go to Europe or the UK, there will always be some takers. However, the rise of this country, home to one-sixth of humanity has been phenomenal and unimaginable. It has emerged as a global destination of investment and opportunity."

EC asks Odisha to delete names of 3.45 lakh deceased voters

The Election Commission (EC) asked Odisha's district collectors to focus on the special summary revision of electoral rolls, and ensure that names of 3.45 lakh deceased people are deleted from the voters' list, an official said.

The directions were issued on Wednesday at a meeting of an EC team that was attended by Chief Electoral Officer Nikunja Bihari Dhal, the collectors of all the 30 districts, revenue divisional commissioners (RDCs) and other senior officials.

It was mentioned in the meeting that names of "as many as 3.45 lakh deceased people were found in the voters' list".

PM Modi to lay foundation stone of projects worth over Rs 50,700 cr in MP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Madhya Pradesh on Thursday and lay the foundation stone of projects worth more than Rs 50,700 crore during an event in Bina in the state, an official said.

The projects include a petrochemical complex at Bina refinery and 10 new industrial projects across the state.

Assembly polls are due in MP this year-end.

The official said the new projects in Madhya Pradesh will provide a major stimulus to industrial development in the state.

Searchers race to recover bodies in Libyan city where 5,100 died in flooding after 2 dams collapsed

Search teams combed streets, wrecked buildings and even the sea Wednesday to look for bodies in a coastal Libyan city where the collapse of two dams unleashed a massive flash flood that killed at least 5,100 people.

The Mediterranean city of Derna has struggled to get help after Sunday night's deluge washed away most access roads. Aid workers who managed to reach the city described devastation in its center, with thousands still missing and tens of thousands left homeless.

Bodies are everywhere, inside houses, in the streets, at sea. Wherever you go, you find dead men, women, and children, Emad al-Falah, an aid worker from Benghazi, said over the phone from Derna. Entire families were lost.

Loudspeaker message outside NYC migrant shelter warns new arrivals they are ''not safe here''

A New Yorker upset that the city has been housing homeless migrants on his block has set up a loudspeaker to deliver an unwelcoming message to his new neighbours: "Immigrants are not safe here.

The message, recorded in six languages, blares all day from a loudspeaker on Scott Herkert's well-groomed front lawn on Staten Island, exhorting migrants to go back to another part of the city because the community doesn't want them.

It urges people brought to a temporary shelter inside a long-vacant Roman Catholic high school not to get off the bus. The message also claims the building has rats and cockroaches.

70% of jet fuels at EU airports will have to be green by 2050

On Wednesday, Members of European Parliament (MEPs) approved a new law to increase the uptake of sustainable fuels, such as advanced biofuels or hydrogen, in the aviation sector.

The RefuelEU aviation rules are part of the "Fit for 55 package", the EU's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55 pc by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and to ensure the EU becomes climate neutral by 2050. They seek to encourage the aviation sector to use sustainable aviation fuels in order to cut emissions.

CM Sukhu urges Centre to declare calamity in Himachal as national disaster

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu has demanded the Union government to declare the disaster in Himachal as a national disaster.

CM Sukhu said that he had put forth this demand with the Prime Minister during the G20 dinner.

He also demanded a special package for the state. "The state government is continuously demanding the central government that the disaster here should be declared a national disaster. Also, the Central Government should give a special relief package to Himachal, but till now both demands have been ignored," CM Sukhu said.
