Pre-monsoon rain lashes coastal Odisha

Pre-monsoon rain lashed parts of Odisha, particularly the coastal belt comprising state capital Bhubaneswar, on Thursday, the Met office said.

Rain was reported from Khurda, Cuttack, Puri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara districts, senior weather scientist Uma Shankar Das told PTI, adding that monsoon is set to enter Odisha in the next few days.

In Bhubaneswar, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorm & lightning lashed Old Town, Airport, Khandagiri.

22 Indian fishermen arrested by Sri Lanka Navy

The Sri Lankan Navy has arrested 22 Indian fishermen from Tamil Nadu for allegedly fishing in its waters, officials said.

The fishermen, reportedly hailing from Ramanathapuram, Pudukottai and Nagapattinam districts were picked up from near Neduntheevu late on Wednesday and four boats were also seized.

They were later taken to Kankesanthurai for further legal action.

Prepare Ayushman Bharat cards for those eligible on priority: Adityanath to officials

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Thursday directed officials to prepare Ayushman Bharat cards of those eligible on priority, saying money should not be an obstacle to avail health facilities.

Under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), the government provides an annual health coverage of Rs 5 lakh per family and all beneficiaries receive Ayushman Bharat cards.

Addressing a 'Janata Darshan' outside Mahant Digvijaynath Smriti Bhawan at Gorakhnath Temple, Adityanath said public health was the government's responsibility and additional funds from the Chief Minister's Discretionary Fund could be released if needed to cater to health care needs of the people.

One dead, five injured in car-lorry collision

One person died and five others were injured in a collision between a car and a container lorry on the Mani-Mysuru Highway, police sources said.

The deceased has been identified as Ravi of Bengaluru. The lorry driver Eshwar (42) of Kulai, car passengers Nithin, Chandrashekar, Harsha and Jagadish were injured and have been hospitalised.

The condition of two of the injured is stated to be serious.

MEA requests Maha govt for consent to take control of Ambedkar house in London

The Centre has requested the Maharashtra government for its consent to hand over the control of Dr B R Ambedkar's house in London to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), an official said on Thursday.

The file has been submitted for approval, the official in the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) told PTI.

The 3.1 million pound three-storey house located on King Henry's Road in north London was purchased by the state government in 2015 to turn it into a museum.

In 2020, the house was converted into a museum and thrown open to public.

30 people injured after bus overturns in UP's Itawah

A bus full of labourers on its way from Shravasti to Gujarat overturned on Thursday morning on the Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Etawah.

The accident took place near the milestone 113 kilometres on the Agra Lucknow Expressway under Police Station Chaubia area of Etawah district

More than two dozen labourers are reported injured in the accident.

India records 95 Covid-19 cases in a day, active infections dip to 1,784

India recorded 95 coronavirus cases in a day while the number of active cases in the country has been recorded at 1,784, according to Union Health Ministry data on Thursday.

The death toll was recorded at 5,31,900, the data updated at 8 am stated.

India has so far logged 4.49 crore Covid cases.

The national COVID-19 recovery rate has been recorded at 98.81 per cent, according to the health ministry website.

Two held over involvement in CoWIN data 'leak'

A man was arrested and a juvenile were apprehended from Bihar in connection with their involvement in the alleged data leak from CoWIN portal, officials said on Thursday.

The man is alleged to have used a Telegram app to leak the data, they said.

There have been claims about a breach of data of citizens registered on the CoWIN platform, and opposition parties have asked the government to take deterrent action.

PM Modi to have one-on-one meeting with US President Biden before high-level talks: White House

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden will have a one-on-one meeting in the Oval Office of the White House on Thursday before holding high-level talks to further boost the growing Indo-US strategic relations in areas like defence, space, clean energy and critical technologies.

This visit will affirm the deep and close partnership between the United States and India and the warm bonds of family and friendship that link Americans and Indians together, the White House said on Wednesday.

The visit will strengthen our two countries' shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific and shared resolve to elevate the technology partnership, including in defence, clean energy, and space, it said.

Any effort for peace must take place in Manipur: Cong on all-party meet called by Shah

The Congress on Thursday termed the all-party meeting convened by Home Minister Amit Shah on the Manipur situation as "too little, too late," and said efforts to bring warring factions on the discussion table will lack seriousness if they are done sitting in Delhi.

Congress general secretary KC Venugopal said the entire nation expects a serious intervention from the Union Government.

"Any effort for peace must take place in Manipur, where the warring communities are brought on the discussion table and a political solution is arrived at. This effort will lack seriousness if it is done sitting in Delhi," he said on Twitter.

After 50 days of death and destruction in Manipur, he said, "Home Minister Amit Shah's call for an all-party meeting is too little, too late".

The government only woke up after Sonia Gandhi's address to the people of Manipur, he said.

SIT should be formed to investigate: Cong hits at organized tax evasion over gold plating of Kedarnath Temple

In the ongoing controversy over the gold plating of the sanctum sanctorum of Kedarnath Temple, Congress has expressed apprehension of organized tax evasion.

Congress leader and former president of Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple committee Ganesh Godiyal said, "When the colour of the gold had once discoloured in 2005, this time how did the temple committee give a tax exemption certificate to the donor without checking the gold?"

He said that SIT should be formed to investigate such cases.

The Uttarakhand Congress has also raised questions on the role of the temple committee.

Subtle shift in India's position on Ukraine: US official

The United States has experienced a subtle shift in India's position on Ukraine and Russia, the Biden Administration said on Wednesday, on the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's high-level talks with President Joe Biden at the White House.

Since the Ukraine conflict began in February last year, Modi spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin as well as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a number of times during which he insisted that the conflict should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.

"What you have seen in the last several months is a subtle shift in the Indian position on the war in Ukraine that started last summer, almost a year ago in August with Prime Minister Modi saying to President Putin to his face that now is not the era for war, a senior State Department official told reporters.

Char Dham Yatra 2023: Number of pilgrims crosses 30 lakh

In the ongoing Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand, over 30 lakh pilgrims have visited Char Dham and more than 10 lakh pilgrims have visited Kedarnath, Ashok Kumar, Director General of Police, said on Thursday.

Efforts are being made to provide a safe and smooth darshan for the devotees, he further said.

"Uttarakhand police personnel are dedicated to smooth darshan and a safe Chardham Yatra for the devotees. So far, more than 30 lakh (Gangotri- 5,35,327; Yamunotri- 4,65,295; Kedarnath- 10,17,195; Badrinath- 8,98,221; Hemkund Sahib- 88,455) devotees have left for their destinations after visiting Char Dham. Shri Kedarnath has been visited by more than 10 lakh devotees," said Ashok Kumar, Director General of Police.
