Light to heavy rains in Rajasthan following onset of monsoon
Light to heavy rain was recorded in different parts of Rajasthan due to the onset of monsoon leading to a drop in maximum and minimum temperatures, the meteorological department said on Wednesday and sounded an orange alert for nine districts of the state. It has predicted heavy rains in Udaipur, Ajmer, Kota, and Bharatpur divisions in south-eastern Rajasthan in the next two days.

Cong questions pricing of predator drone deal with US, seeks complete transparency
The Congress on Wednesday demanded complete transparency in the multi-crore India-US drone deal, while alleging that the 31 MQ-9B Predator UAV drones were being procured for a higher price. Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera said at a press conference that national security was paramount and that several doubts were being raised on the predator drone deal.
India ranked 67th globally on Energy Transition Index, Sweden on top: WEF
The World Economic Forum on Wednesday ranked India at the 67th place globally on its Energy Transition Index and said it is the only major economy with energy transition momentum accelerating across all dimensions. Sweden topped the list and was followed by Denmark, Norway, Finland and Switzerland in the top five on the list of 120 countries. Releasing the report published in collaboration with Accenture, the WEF said the global energy transition has plateaued amid the global energy crisis and geopolitical volatilities, but India is among the countries that have made significant improvements.
Two official teams from India, EU to discuss carbon tax issues
India and the European Union have constituted two teams to discuss issues pertaining to the EU's carbon tax, which will kick in from October this year, a government official said. The European Union (EU) is introducing the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from October 1 this year. It would have an impact on seven carbon-intensive sectors, including steel, cement, fertiliser, aluminium and hydrocarbon products.

Water stock in lakes down to 7%, Mumbai civic body to impose water cut from July 1
With the level of lakes supplying water to Mumbai going down due to inadequate rainfall in their catchment areas, the city civic body has decided to impose a 10 per cent water cut here starting from Saturday, officials said. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal has also appealed to citizens to save water and use it judiciously.

Tomato prices are burning a hole in common people's pockets with the vegetable being sold at Rs 80-100 per kg in some cities. On Wednesday, the price of tomato was between Rs 90-100 a kg in Delhi. "In wholesale, we are getting tomatoes for Rs 60-80 kg. In retail people will get it for Rs 90-100. The rates have gone up in the last 10-15 days due to rains," says Deepak, a tomato seller in Delhi. The reason behind this is the dip in supply due to heatwaves in tomato-growing areas and heavy rain.

UCC can't be forced on people by agenda-driven majoritarian govt: Chidambaram
A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a strong pitch for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), Congress leader P Chidambaram said it cannot be forced on people by an "agenda-driven majoritarian government" as it will "widen divisions" among people. The former Union minister claimed the prime minister was batting for UCC to divert people's attention from issues of unemployment, price rise and hate crimes. He also alleged the BJP was using UCC to polarise the society.
Active coronavirus cases in country dip to 1,579: Health Ministry data
India has logged 65 new coronavirus infections, while the active cases have dipped to 1,579, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Wednesday. The death toll was recorded at 5,31,905, with one death reported by Uttar Pradesh and one reconciled by Kerala, the data updated at 8 am stated.
Patnaik urges Sitharaman to withdraw 18% GST on Kendu leaves
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to completely waive the 18 per cent GST tax on Kendu leaves as it would adversely affect the livelihood of the poorest of the poor section of the society.
Patnaik in a letter written to Sitharaman on Monday said that 18 per cent GST on Kendu leaves should be waived in the larger interest of poor and tribal people associated with Kendu leaves trade in the state.
