NATO's chief avoids talk of Ukraine's membership, says priority is helping Kyiv defend itself

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on Tuesday sidestepped questions about Ukraine's possible membership of the military alliance, saying that the priority now must be to strengthen the country's hand in any future peace talks with Russia by sending it more weapons. Rutte's remarks, ahead of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, came days after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that extending alliance membership to territory now under Kyiv's control could end the hot stage" of the almost 3-year war in Ukraine, where Russian forces are pressing deeper into their western neighbour.

The Nitish Kumar government in Bihar on Tuesday gave a relief of 180 working days to land owners to upload their self-declaration documents related to the landed property owned by them. The land owners can now upload their self-declaration documents on the official website of the Revenue and Land Reforms Department by February 2025.

More than 160 protesting farmers arrested in Noida

 Police on Tuesday arrested more than 160 protesting farmers, including the president of Bharatiya Kisan Parishad Sukhbir Khalifa, who were holding a sit-in at the 'Dalit Prerna Sthal' here after their march to Delhi on land compensation and other demands was stopped a day earlier. The protesters had gathered from different parts of Uttar Pradesh on Monday on the call of Samyukta Kisan Morcha and had threatened to resume their march to the national capital if their demands were not met within seven days.

Govt clears Delhi HC Chief Justice Manmohan's appointment as Supreme Court judge

The Centre on Tuesday notified the elevation of Delhi High Court's Chief Justice Manmohan as a judge of the Supreme Court. In a related post, Minister of State, Ministry of Law and Justice (independent charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal on X wrote, "In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India." Once he takes oath as judge of the top court, the working strength of the top court will rise to 33, one short of the sanctioned strength of 34, which includes the chief justice of India.

Fire breaks out in northeast Delhi factory, no injuries

A fire broke out at a factory located in northeast Delhi's Johri Pur area on Tuesday, a Delhi Fire Services (DFS) official said here. A call regarding the fire was received around noon and eight fire tenders were pressed into service. The fire was brought under control in an operation that lasted an hour and a half, the official said.

3 dead, 1 injured after car plunges into ravine in Shimla

Three people were killed and one injured after the car they were travelling in plunged into a ravine in the Rampur subdivision here, police said on Tuesday. The deceased have been identified as Mintu Chauhan (27), his wife Sheetal Chauhan (28) and Alok Sharma (24), while Arun Chauhan (23) sustained injuries in the accident. All four victims belong to Nankhari tehsil, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Shimla, Sanjeev Kumar Gandhi.
