SC refuses to entertain ex-IPS officer's plea against cancellation of nomination papers from Birbhum

The top court today refused to entertain a petition of former IPS officer Debasish Dhar challenging cancellation of his nomination papers. Dhar was given a BJP ticket to contest the Lok Sabha polls from West Bengal's Birbhum. The nomination papers of Dhar as a BJP candidate was cancelled after he failed to produce the 'no dues certificate'. He had resigned as an IPS officer recently.

Supreme Court grants "one more opportunity" to Patanjali to file the original page of apologies published

The Supreme Court on Tuesday granted "one more opportunity" to Patanjali to file the original page of each newspaper in which the apology was issued. The SC bench said, "There has been a marked improvement." "There was only Patanjali earlier, now there are names. We appreciate that. They have understood," Justice Amanullah said. The top court had asked Patanjali to re-issue the apology after the initial one was smaller.

Go First's lenders consider liquidation after court order on planes

After a court order allowed lessors of Go Air to take back their planes, lenders will meet later this week to talk about the future course of action for the bankrupt airline, including liquidation.  "There is no value left in the airline after the court order and chances of revival seem very grim," one of the bankers said. The airline owes a total of Rs 6,521 crore to its creditors, which include Central Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, IDBI Bank and Deutsche Bank.

Kejriwal's health is fine, says Punjab CM Mann after meeting Delhi chief minister in Tihar

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann today met his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal in jail and said the AAP national convener asked him to actively campaign for INDIA bloc candidates in the Lok Sabha polls. Mann also told reporters that Kejriwal's health is fine and he is getting insulin. The Delhi chief minister asked people not to worry about him and exercise their franchise during the elections, he said.

Mass stabbing in London, man with sword taken into custody

British police have taken a man armed with a sword under custody after receiving reports of individuals being stabbed during a serious event in northeast London, Reuters has reported. The Metropolitan Police said that the 36-year-old suspect was apprehended following reports of a vehicle crashing into a house near Hainault train station. According to the police, the suspect assaulted members of the public and two officers

Chinese scientist who published first sequence of Covid-19 virus protests after being evicted from lab

 Virologist Zhang Yongzhen, the first scientist to publish a sequence of the Covid-19 virus in China, was staging a sit-in protest after officials locked him out of his lab. Yongzhen wrote in an online post on Monday that he and his team were suddenly notified they were being evicted from their lab, the latest in a series of setbacks.

IMD predicts severe heatwave over East India

The India Meteorological Department has forecast severe heatwave conditions over East India till May 1 and over the South Peninsular region in the coming five days. The weather body also says that the situation will improve gradually after Wednesday.

According to the the IMD bulletin, heavy rainfall is also expected in the coming five days, with thunderstorms over Northeast India.

Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi takes charge as new Navy chief

Seven Naxalites killed in encounter with security forces in Chhattisgarh

Seven Maoists were killed in an encounter with security forces along the border of Narayanpur and Kanker districts in Chhattisgarh today, police said. The gunfight took place when a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF) and District Reserve Guard (DRG) was out on an anti-Naxal operation in a forest of Tekmeta, a police official said.
