Food inflation still a concern; uncertainty due to shortfall of monsoon: Nestle India CMD Suresh Narayanan

Food inflation is still a cause of concern despite measures taken by the government to check overall price rise and the movement of commodity prices needs to be closely watched for a long-term impact, Nestle India Chairman & Managing Director Suresh Narayanan said on Thursday.

Going by publicly available information, now it is reasonably clear that with a 30 per cent deficit in the monsoon, Kharif crops might get impacted, even if the sowing is good, said Narayanan in a media roundtable here.

With this El Nino impact not fully played out, we still have to watch for the spectre of food inflation, he said.

Too many civil bodies in Manipur; they need to talk in single voice: CM Biren Singh

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday lamented that there are too many civil society organisations in the state and they speak in different voices, making it difficult to find a solution to the ethnic problem rocking Manipur for nearly four months.

He urged those bodies to present a concrete proposal to solve the crisis in one voice, so it can be conveyed to the Centre by the state government.

There are too many organisations. We are at a very crucial stage now. Both the central and the state governments are confused about whom to talk to. We will go with the public (opinion) and never work against the interests of the people, Singh said at a programme.

Fitch retains SBI, 5 other PSB' rating at BBB, with stable outlook

Fitch Ratings on Thursday affirmed the ratings of the nation's six public sector lenders, including State Bank of India (SBI) and Bank of Baroda (BoB), at BBB- with stable outlook.

The other banks which the agency rated BBB- with stable outlook are Punjab National Bank, Canara Bank, Bank of India, and Union Bank of India.

The rater has also affirmed these banks' viability rating at BB and its government support rating of BBB-.

One arrested, another detained in connection with pro-Khalistan messages on Delhi Metro walls

The Delhi Police has arrested one person and detained one more in connection with writing pro-Khalistan messages on the walls of four Delhi Metro stations ahead of the G20 Summit, officials said on Thursday.

At a press conference here, police said the accused carried out the act on the directions of Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the chief of the banned Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) outfit.

Police said while Preet Pal has been arrested, Rajvinder Singh was detained. He will be arrested once he reaches Delhi, they said.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday said keeping India out of the permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council will only call the credibility of the international organisation into question. Speaking at an event at Delhi University, Jaishankar said the UN was formed in 1940 during the Second World War and had only 50 member countries at the time. However, the number of members now has increased by 4 times with about 200 countries as members, he added.
