SC agrees to hear plea of transgender person whose services were terminated

The Supreme Court (SC) today said it will hear the plea of a transgender person whose services as teacher were terminated by two private schools of Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh after her sexual orientation became known to employers.

“We will see what we can do,” said a bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices J B Pardiwla and Manoj Misra while issuing notices to the Centre, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh governments on the plea of the transgender woman.

3.9 magnitude earthquake hits Jammu and Kashmir, no reports of any damage

An earthquake of 3.9 magnitude hit Jammu and Kashmir today  but there were no reports of any damage, officials said. A cop said there has so far been no reports of any damage from anywhere. The National Centre of Seismology stated that the tremor was felt at 11:33 am.

Indian youth are creating a brave new world: PM Modi at Bharathidasan University

 
Indian innovators took the number of patents from around 4,000 in 2014 to almost 50,000 now, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the 38th convocation ceremony of Bharathidasan University. PM Modi quoted the 'Puthiyathor Ulagam Seivom' Tamil verses of poet Bharathidasan, after whom the university had been named, and said it meant creating a brave new world which is also the university's motto.
 
Indian scientists are on the world map through missions like Chandrayaan and our innovators took the number of patents from around 4,000 in 2014 to almost 50,000 now, PM Modi said.

Karti Chidambaram appears before ED again in Chinese visa money laundering case

Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Karti Chidambaram today appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for a new round of questioning in a money laundering case linked to issuance of visas to some Chinese nationals in 2011.
 
On December 23, the Sivaganga MP was questioned by ED officials regarding this case and the central agency recorded his statement under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The 52-year-old MP again deposed before the investigating officer of the case at the ED headquarters in central Delhi.

Japan earthquake death toll rises to 30, officials warn of risk of more strong quakes

A series of violent earthquakes hit western Japan  leaving at least 30 people dead and damaging buildings, vehicles and boats. A day after a magnitude 7.6 temblor hit the area on Monday afternoon, aftershocks continued to shake Ishikawa prefecture and nearby areas. Officials warning people in some areas on Tuesday to stay away from their homes due to a risk of more strong quakes.

PM Modi condoles demise of Padma Bhushan awardee Professor Ved Prakash Nanda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today condoled the death of Professor Ved Prakash Nanda whose work he said highlighted his "strong commitment" to "legal education."
 
"Deeply saddened by the passing away of Professor Ved Prakash Nanda Ji, a distinguished academic whose contributions to the legal field are invaluable," PM Modi posted on social media platform X.
 
Nanda was an Indian American academic who received the Padma Bhushan award in 2018 in the field of literature and education.

Ministries to set up mechanism to monitor steel, aluminium products export at concessional rates to US

The ministries of mines, steel and the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) will establish an internal mechanism to monitor the export of steel and aluminium products at concessional duties to the US, an official said.
 
Indian exports of these products were earlier attracting additional duties in the US, as Washington, in 2018, imposed a 25 per cent import duty on steel products and 10 per cent on certain aluminium products on grounds of national security. In retaliation, India in June 2019, imposed additional customs duties on 28 American products.
 
The US is now allowing these imports from India without paying the extra 25 per cent and 10 per cent duties in return for New Delhi's decision to remove retaliatory duties on eight American products like apple and walnut.

Trinamool Congress Member of Parliament Derek O'Brien today said the centre perhaps wants opposition members to behave like BJP MPs Ramesh Bidhuri and Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh -- both of whom are facing allegations of misconduct -- as 14 opposition MPs continue to remain suspended from Parliament.
 
During the recent Winter session of Parliament, a hundred opposition MPs in the Lok Sabha and 46 in the Rajya Sabha were suspended after demanding a discussion and a statement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the December 13 security breach.

Manipur update: 3 killed in Manipur as gunmen open fire on villagers

 
At least three people were killed and five seriously injured when gunmen in camouflage fatigues fired on villagers in Manipur, officials said today, as isolated incidents of violence continued in the region.
 
 At least 180 people died after fighting broke out between members of the majority Meitei and minority Kuki communities in the state in May, after a court order suggested privileges granted to Kukis also be extended to Meiteis.
