Special Police Officers stage a sit-in protest near Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha over demand to increase pay
To push their demands the Special Police Officers on Monday reached near the Vidhan Sabha premises and sat on a dharna. Upon receiving information, Ranchi City SP Raj Kumar Mehta along with Ranchi Rural SP Sumit Aggarwal and SDM Ranchi Utkarsh Anand reached on the spot and tried to convince the SPOs to return back to their original place of demonstration at Morhabadi Grounds. "We have been sitting on Dharna for last seven days. No official, minister came to us. We were appointed in 2017 on remuneration of Rs 10,000, it is still the same after seven years. We are asking for justice. We are asking for absorption in the force," says Ali Jaan Ansari, SPO Garhwa.

Mumbai University cancels exams scheduled for today due to heavy rains
Mumbai University has postponed all exams of the Centre of Distance and Open Learning scheduled on Monday of the first half following heavy rains, an official statement said. Mumbai city recorded over 300 mm of rainfall at various places in six hours from 1 am to 7 am today, according to the BMC. Some trains were also cancelled following heavy rains, according to the Central Railways. "The Mumbai University has postponed all exams of the Centre of Distance and Open Learning (formerly IDOL) scheduled on Monday, July 8, 2024 of the first half, i.e., from 11 am to 2 pm. The new date for these exams is July 13, 2024. Time & venue will remain the same," a statement from the Varsity said.

Look out circular issued against Shiv Sena leader's son who was 'driving' BMW car that killed woman
The accused, who was allegedly driving a BMW car which fatally knocked down a woman in Mumbai's Worli area, is the son of a Shiv Sena leader from neighbouring Palghar district. Kaveri Nakhwa (45), resident of Worli Koliwada, was going with her husband Pradeep on the arterial Dr Annie Besant Road when the luxury car, allegedly driven by Mihir Shah, crashed it into the couple's two-wheeler at around 5.30 am on Sunday, according to the police. The car dragged the woman for more than 2 km, a police official said.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Russia, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday said that the biggest change in relations with Russia is that the economic relationship between the two countries has improved tremendously. Speaking on the visit, he said, "It is a way of taking stock of any relationship... one of the biggest changes has been, that our economic relationship with Russia has grown tremendously... at the leadership level, it will be a great opportunity for PM Modi and Russian President Putin to sit down and directly talk to each other." The EAM added, "There was a bit of a delay in our annual summits, it is a good tradition, we are two countries which have a strong history of working together. We did value the need for an annual summit. Last year when I went to Moscow, I carried a message from the PM that we are committed to the annual summit and we will do it sooner rather than later...it is a regular recurrence. It is a way of taking stock of any relationship."

As crude oil prices drop, Rupee rises 5 paise to 83.44 against US dollar in early trade
The Indian Rupee appreciated 5 paise to 83.44 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, as the American currency and crude oil prices retreated from their elevated levels. Forex traders said foreign fund inflows also aided investors' sentiments and supported the rupee. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened at 83.45 and gained further to 83.44 against the greenback, registering a rise of 5 paise from its previous close.
