The Meghalaya High Court has directed the Union Home Ministry to deploy 10 companies of Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) to check the transportation of illegally mined coal in the northeastern state.
A bench of the high court headed by Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee said this while hearing a PIL on the matter on Wednesday.
"The Union Ministry of Home Affairs, through the Home Secretary, is directed to ensure the deployment of 10 companies of appropriate Central Armed Police Force to be commanded independently or jointly by officers from the local police that may be selected by the Court, strictly for the purpose of keeping a vigil on the roads and arresting the illegal transportation of illegally mined coal in the state," the court said.
Andaman traders' body seeks Amit Shah's intervention over demands
The Andaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) sought Union Home Minister Amit Shah's intervention into their long-pending demands.
The ACCI had called for a 12-hour strike in the islands on Wednesday over their demands. Normal life was affected in the archipelago as shops and business establishments remained shut and commercial vehicles remained off the roads.
ACCI said the strike was called over several issues, including a steep hike in power tariff, arbitrary increase in circle rates of land, non-registration of flats, and demand for better infrastructure and ease of doing business.
Jharkhand: Union min, ex-CMs among 41 BJP members booked for Sec 144 violation
An FIR was registered against 41 BJP leaders and workers, including Union minister Arjun Munda and former chief ministers Raghubar Das and Babulal Marandi, for violating prohibitory orders during the saffron party's recent secretariat gherao programme in the Jharkhand capital, an official said on Thursday.
Police had burst tear gas shells, used water canons and lathi-charged the protestors to prevent them from marching towards the secretariat on Tuesday, where prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPc were clamped. The administration had said the violators will be booked.
Shiromani Akali Dal calls for high-level inquiry into Bathinda military station firing incident
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Prem Singh Chandumajra on Wednesday called for a high-level inquiry into a firing incident in Punjab's Bathinda military station, which claimed the lives of at least four jawans.
"It is a very sad incident. There should be a high-level inquiry into the incident," Prem Singh Chandumajra said in a press conference in Chandigarh.
Punjab Police on Wednesday registered an FIR against two unknown persons in connection with the firing at the Bathinda Military Station.

Former US President Donald Trump is heading back to New York City for a civil trial after filing a $500 million suit against his former lawyer, Michael Cohen -- the prime witness against him in the criminal case against him.
In the case filed in a federal court in Florida on Wednesday, Trump alleged that Cohen had violated his contract with him as his lawyer, disclosed confidential information and spread "falsehoods".
Cohen had acted as Trump's "fixer" paying $130,000 to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to buy her silence after she claimed to have had an affair with the former President.

Army soldier dies of gunshot wound at Bathinda military station, no connection to yesterday's firing
An Army soldier died of gunshot injuries at the Bathinda military station in Punjab on Wednesday, around 12 hours after four personnel from an artillery unit were killed in a firing incident.
The Army said death of the soldier on Wednesday afternoon has no connection with the firing incident.
"A soldier died of a gunshot wound at approximately 4:30 pm on April 12 at Bathinda Military Station.The soldier was on sentry duty with his service weapon," the Army said. "The case purportedly seems to be of attempted suicide"
AIIMS-Delhi issues advisory after staffers tested positive for Covid-19
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Delhi has issued an advisory for its staff to follow Covid-19 appropriate behaviour after a few of them were tested positive for the infection.
"Must use reusable cloth face cover/surgical mask in the workplace. Ensure proper cleaning and frequent sanitation of the workplace, particularly of the frequently touched surfaces," the AIIMS management said in an advisory on Wednesday.
"Cover your nose and mouth with elbow/handkerchief/tissue while sneezing and coughing. Maintain personal hygiene and physical distancing," read the advisory.
