BMW hit-and-run: BMC demolishes illegal portion of Juhu bar where accused went before accident
An illegal portion of the bar in Mumbai's Juhu that served alcohol to 24-year-old accused Mihir Shah was demolished by BMC. The action was taken under relevant provisions of the Bombay Foreign Liquor Rules, 1953. The woman killed in the accident has been identified as Kaveri Nakhwa, 45. She was with her husband, Pradip Nakhwa, who escaped with injuries.

Led by CJI, SC reserves verdict on PIL alleging rise in child marriages in country
The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its judgement on a PIL of an NGO which alleged a rise in child marriages in the country and non-implementation of the relevant statute in "letter and spirit". A bench comprising Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra heard submissions from the counsel of the petitioner, 'Society for Enlightenment and Voluntary Action', and Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, before reserving the verdict.

Yet another hit-and-run: Car fatally knocks down woman in Nashik; driver held
A 31-year-old woman was killed after a speeding car knocked her down in Nashik city, police said on Wednesday. The 51-year-old car driver, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident on Tuesday evening and fled from the spot, was later arrested, they said. The accused has been identified as Devchand Rambhau Tidme, resident of Dhruv Nagar who worked at a company in Satpur MIDC area here, an official from Gangapur police station said.

Madhya Pradesh: Five killed, six injured as MUV collides with tree in Narmadapuram
Five persons in their twenties were killed and six others injured when their multi-utility vehicle (MUV) collided with a tree in the wee hours of Wednesday in Narmadapuram district of Madhya Pradesh, a police official said. The accident occurred near Pachlavara village when the victims were returning to Pipariya town in the district after attending a marriage function in Sadia village, he said.

Calcutta HC to hear Guv's plea for interim order in defamation suit against Mamata Banerjee on July 15
The Calcutta High Court will hear on Monday an application for interim order by West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose in a defamation suit filed by him against Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and some other TMC leaders over alleged comments made by her. Justice Krishna Rao on Wednesday granted leave for the defamation plaint to be registered before his court. He directed that Bose's application for an interim order, for a direction upon Banerjee and the others not to make any further comment on the issue under contention, will be taken up for hearing on Monday.

Muslim woman entitled to seek maintenance from spouse under section 125 of CrpC: SC
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that a Muslim woman can seek maintenance from her husband under section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), which is applicable to all married women irrespective of religion. A bench of Justices BV Nagarathna and Augustine George Masih, which pronounced a separate but concurrent verdict, said section 125 of the erstwhile CrPC which deals with wife's legal right to maintenance, covers Muslim women. "We are hereby dismissing the criminal appeal with the major conclusion that section 125 would be applicable to all women and not just married women," Justice Nagarathna said while pronouncing the verdict.

Another batch of 4,600 pilgrims leave Jammu base camp to join Amarnath Yatra
Amid heavy rains, more than 4,600 pilgrims left Jammu city in the early hours of Wednesday for the twin base camps in Kashmir to join the annual Amarnath Yatra, officials said. This was the 13th batch of pilgrims that left the Bhagwati Nagar base camp here for Baltal and Pahalgam base camps in Kashmir. The batch of 4,627 pilgrims left in 185 vehicles around 3 am amid chants of "Bum Bum Bholey". They were escorted by a CRPF contingent amid area dominations by the Army, the officials said.

Valmiki 'scam': ED raids places linked to former Karnataka Minister Nagendra & Cong MLA Daddal
The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday conducted searches at multiple places allegedly linked to former Karnataka Minister B Nagendra and Congress MLA Basanagouda Daddal in connection with the illegal money transfer case involving a state-run corporation, the ED sources said. The raids were carried out in Bengaluru, Raichur and Ballari as part of the probe into the alleged unauthorised transfer of Rs 187 crore belonging to the Karnataka Maharshi Valmiki Scheduled Tribes Development Corporation from its bank accounts, sources said. This includes Rs 88.62 crore illegally credited to various accounts of some IT companies and a Hyderabad-based cooperative bank, according to PTI sources.
