TN Governor flags off first train heading for 'Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam' in Gujarat

The first train carrying delegates from Tamil Nadu to Saurashtra region in Gujarat aimed at strengthening ties between the two states as part of the upcoming 'Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam' was flagged off here by Governor R N Ravi on Saturday.

The train departed in the early hours from Chennai Egmore Railway Station and will reach Veravel in Gujarat after a 36-hour journey, Southern Railway officials said.

Maha court grants Rahul Gandhi permanent exemption from appearance in defamation case

A court in Maharashtra's Thane district on Saturday granted a permanent exemption to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from appearing before it in a defamation case filed against him by a Rashtriya Sawyamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary.
 
Bhiwandi First Class Judicial Magistrate C Wadikar who heard Gandhi's application filed through his counsel Narayan Iyer observed that the Congress leader deserves a permanent exemption.
 
The magistrate also set June 3 for recording evidence in the defamation suit filed by local RSS worker Rajesh Kunte.

Strip-searching undertrial prisoner amounts to violation of his right to privacy: Court

Conducting a search of an undertrial prisoner by making him nude amounts to violation of his fundamental right to privacy, observed a special court here and ordered authorities of a Mumbai prison to use scanners and gadgets instead of strip searches.
 
Special judge under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) B D Shelke passed the order on April 10 on a complaint by Ahmed Kamal Shaikh, an accused in the 1993 blasts case. The detailed order was available recently.
 
Shaikh claimed that whenever he is taken back to the prison after court proceedings, the guards at the entrance search him after stripping him naked before other prisoners and staff members.

Non-disclosure of cases in poll affidavit: Fadnavis appears before court

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday appeared before a court here in connection with an application seeking action against him for alleged non-disclosure of criminal cases in his election affidavit in 2014.

Fadnavis's statement would be recorded by Civil Judge V A Deshmukh after which the court will hear final arguments in the matter.

Kerala: 15 Sabarimala pilgrims injured as bus topples in Idukki

At least 15 pilgrims from Tamil Nadu who were traveling to Sabarimala Ayyappa Swamy hill shrine in Kerala were injured after the bus in which they were traveling toppled near Kuttinakanam in Idukki district of Kerala.

The pilgrims were from Tiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu and the bus toppled around 10 am near Kuttikanam on Saturday morning which is Vishu day in state (Kerala New Year day).

Centre pushes for regional language with major change in CAPF Constable exams in 13 languages

In a landmark decision, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) on Saturday announced to conduct Constable (General Duty) examination for Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) in 13 regional languages in addition to Hindi and English.
 
The examination in 13 regional languages in addition to Hindi and English will be conducted from January 1, 2024 onwards, mentioned an MHA statement.
 
In addition to Hindi and English, the question paper will be set in Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Malayalam, Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Odia, Urdu, Punjabi, Manipuri and Konkani.

Delhi excise policy case: BJP dares Kejriwal to take lie detector test

The BJP on Saturday claimed that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was trembling in fear following the CBI summon to him in the excise policy case, and said he should take a lie detector test if he had nothing to be afraid of.

Addressing a press conference, BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also slammed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader for attacking the central government over the summons and said it was not the time for rhetoric but accountability.

CBI arrests assistant engineer of Postal Department in bribery case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday arrested an assistant engineer of the Postal Department for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe for himself and an executive engineer of the department.

A senior CBI official said that accused Subasish Pal Assistant Engineer (Civil), Postal Civil Sub Division, Sambalpur (Odisha), demanded a bribe of Rs 1.22 lakh for himself along with Rs 18,500 for an Executive Engineer (Civil) for releasing a due payment of Rs 3.77 lakh of a contractor.

CBI arrests ASI of Delhi Police's Crime Branch in bribery case

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of the Delhi Police's Crime Branch for allegedly demanding Rs 30 lakhs from a woman to help her in an NDPS case.

The accused has used the term "10 kg suji" as code word to demand bribe.
