Mandya incident happened 'on spur of moment', not communal violence: Home Minister G Parameshwara

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Thursday said the clashes between two groups during Ganesha idol immersion procession in Nagamangala town in Mandya district cannot be termed as "communal violence" as he maintained that the incident happened on the "spur of the moment". He said 52 people have been arrested from "both sides", and after reviewing CCTV footage about their involvement in the incidents like stone-pelting and torching of vehicles and properties, cases will be registered against them.

Four killed in car-truck collision in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar

Four people were killed after a car collided with a truck on the Delhi-Dehradun National Highway here on Thursday, police said. Two others were injured in the accident that happened early in the morning near Pancheda Bypass in Nai Mandi area, they said. The accident happened when seven people were travelling from Aligharh to Auli in their Ertiga car which collided with the rear side of a truck, Circle Officer Rupali Rao said.

Returning home after more than five years of imprisonment, Member of Parliament Sheikh Abdul Rashid said Thursday no one needs peace more than the people of Kashmir but "that peace will come at our conditions" and not on the terms set by the Centre. Popularly known as Engineer Rashid, the Awami Ittehad Party (AIP) chief landed at the Srinagar airport in the morning and he bowed down on the road after exiting the terminal. "We want to tell (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi that no one needs peace more than we do. But that peace will come at our conditions, not yours. We do not want the peace of a graveyard but peace with dignity," he said.

ED attaches assets worth Rs 43.52 cr in fraud case linking Ushdev International

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has attached movable and immovable properties in the form of land and buildings and amounts lying in bank accounts in the form of fixed deposits amounting to Rs 43.52 crore in the case of Rs 1438.45 crore bank fraud by Ushdev International Limited (UIL) and others, the agency said on Thursday. The ED's Mumbai Zonal office attached these properties on September 10 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

Cement company executive held for attempting to bribe collector

The anti-corruption vigilance sleuths arrested a cement manufacturing company executive on charge of inducing a district collector to receive bribe, an official release said. As per the information received, one person had been to the office of Bargarh Collector, Aditya Goyal to meet him on Wednesday. "During the visit, he offered him a flower bouquet and a sweet packet. Suspecting the packet, the Collector directed his peon to open the packet, in which four bundles of Rs 500 currency notes were found," the release said.

More than 38,000 Ganesh idols have been immersed in Mumbai on the fifth day of the Ganpati festival, civic officials said on Thursday. No untoward incident was reported anywhere during the immersion, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The 10-day festival began with the Ganesh Chaturthi on September 7.

Five of family die in road accident in Tamil Nadu

Five people, including a child, died instantly when the car in which they were travelling collided with a lorry near Chidambaram in the district on Thursday, said police. They were proceeding to Mayiladuthurai from Chennai when the lorry hit their vehicle killing all five occupants early today. The lorry driver and cleaner fled the spot, they said.

IMD warns of extremely heavy rain in parts of Delhi, Uttarakhand, UP over next 3 days

 A depression that originated over central India is expected to bring heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand, Delhi, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh over the next two to three days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday. According to the latest IMD update issued at 8:50 am, the system was located near Gwalior, around 50 kilometres north of the city and 60 kilometres south-southeast of Agra. It is expected to continue moving towards the north-northeast direction over the next 24 hours.

Coastal Road to Bandra-Worli Sea Link to open for northbound vehicles from Sep 13

Northbound vehicles on the Coastal Road can directly enter the Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai from Friday, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has said. The Coastal Road, estimated to cost about Rs 14,000 crore, will provide a direct connection with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, reducing travel time between south Mumbai and suburbs and improving the overall commuting experience. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and his deputies Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar will inspect the new connection between the Coastal Road and the sea link on Thursday afternoon before it is opened for vehicular traffic the next day, BMC officials said on Wednesday.
